In the presence of some fomi of relaxation the equations of motion must be supplemented by a temi involving a relaxation superoperator—superoperator because it maps one operator into another operator. The literature on the correct fomi of such a superoperator is large, contradictory and incomplete. In brief, the extant theories can be divided into two kinds, those without memory relaxation (Markovian) Tp and those with memory... [Pg.233]

With the current impressive CPU and main memory capacity of relatively inexpensive desktop PC s, non-direct SCF ab initio calculations involving 300-400 basis functions can be practical. However, to run these kinds of calculation, 20 GBytes of hard disk space might be needed. Such big disk space is unlikely to be available on desktop PCs. A direct SCF calculation can eliminate the need for large disk storage. [Pg.266]

In celebrating the centenary of the birth of Anatoly K. Babko we appreciatively recall his diligence, scientific, pedagogical and organizing talents. His active and purposeful character will always feature in our strikingly kind memory of Anatoly K. Babko - who through all his life maintained a love and loyalty to science. [Pg.7]

The reader interested in this kind of magnetic theory can find some historical memories in an overview by the American physicist, Anderson (1979). [Pg.142]

New, unused columns were used to minimize the memory effects known not only with silica gel active packings, but also with PS/DVB materials (13). One single column of each kind (7.5, 7.8, 8, or 10 mm in diameter and 250 or 300 mm in length) was used in each series of experiments. [Pg.448]

Carved wooden bears in all shapes and sizes overwhelmed Yngve and me at our visit to Noboribetsu in 1976. There was an afternoon to spare before the opening of the "Oji International Seminar on Theories and Ab Initio Computations of Molecular Electronic Structure" at Tomakomai, Hokkaido in the fall of 1976 so we wished to experience the hot springs. The train left us with a choice of buses, the desdnations of which were clearly indicated in Japanese writing. We found the right one and came to a city in a canyon where the sulfur fumes and hot water let themselves out. The kind reception by Kimio Ohno and Fukashi Sasaki at Hokkaido University remains a vivid memory. [Pg.15]

Adjustable Workbench (PAW) instrument assembly. The SH shown in Figs. 3.15 and 3.16 contains the electromechanical transducer (mounted in the center), the main and reference Co/Rh sources, multilayered radiation shields, detectors and their preamplifiers and main (linear) amplifiers, and a contact plate and sensor. The contact plate and contact sensor are used in conjunction with the IDD to apply a small preload when it places the SH holding it firmly against the target. The electronics board contains power supplies/conditioners, the dedicated CPU, different kinds of memory, firmware, and associated circuitry for instrument control and data processing. The SH of the miniaturized Mossbauer spectrometer MIMOS II has the dimensions (5 x 5.5 x 9.5) cm and weighs only ca. 400 g. Both 14.4 keV y-rays and 6.4 keV Fe X-rays are detected simultaneously by four Si-PIN diodes. The mass of the electronics board is about 90 g [36],... [Pg.55]

As I look back at this experience, it was an awesome adventure to be alone, during and for an interval of time after this discovery, with the apparatus showing one new effect after another, when there was no one in the Illinois Physics Department experienced in NMR with whom I could talk. Little did the early NMR resonance community realize that the analogue of spin echo hidden memory contained in excited phases of all kinds of states of matter, including plasmas, would be obtained in the future by use of optical laser, electric, and acoustic pulses as well. And now today the use of spin echoes is a standard procedure for magnetic resonance imaging of the human body for medical diagnosis. [Pg.630]

Yes, I mourned Aunt Elaine quietly and with a kind of joy for what she d been and what she d been to me my mourning was simple. Whereas for Adam. .. even after two years of it creeping ever nearer I hadn t expected the unbearable, outraged pain that flayed me in the weeks after his death. Even after two more years sometimes it still flays me, and leaves me shivering and raw for whatever cold winds of memory are passing. [Pg.131]

She shakes her head. I kind of can t imagine it. I mean, you see all the stuff on the TV, and movies. Probably more than they— you—ever saw then. But it s... in the streets you know. People you know. Some of the older ones where I work, they ve got amazing memories, even when they ve no idea what day it is. There s one old lady did nursing in the First World War, in the trenches and stuff. We had a hundredth birthday party for her not so long ago, and she s all there. Remember that series on the TV— Testament of Youth7. She says they got it all wrong. ... [Pg.313]

Photons in quantum optical cavities also constitute excellent qubit candidates [52]. Resonant coupling of atoms with a single mode of the radiation field was experimentally achieved 25 years ago [53], and eventually the coherent coupling of quantum optical cavities with atoms or (simple) molecules was suggested as a means to achieve stable quantum memories in a hybrid quantum processor [54]. There might be a role to play for molecular spin qubits in this kind of hybrid quantum devices that combine solid-state with flying qubits. [Pg.50]

In an immune response, antibodies are produced and secreted by the B-lymphocytes in conjunction with the T, cells. In the majority of hapten-carrier systems, the B cells end up producing antibodies that are specific for both the hapten and the carrier. In these cases, the T lymphocytes will have specific-binding domains on the carrier, but will not recognize the hapten alone. In a kind of synergism, the B- and T-cells cooperate to induce a hapten-specific antibody response. After such an immune response has taken place, if the host is subsequently challenged with only the hapten, usually it will respond by producing hapten-specific antibodies from memory cells formed after the initial immunization. For a review of immunobiology (see Janeway, 2004). [Pg.746]

The key feature of the systems to be considered in this book is that they have short memories that is, the effects of perturbations diminish with the passage of time. In the example of this chapter, the carbon dioxide pressure returns to a value of 1 within a century or two of the perturbation, regardless of the size of the initial perturbation. In this kind of system, computational errors do not grow as the calculation proceeds instead, the system forgets old errors. That is why the reverse Euler method is useful despite its simplicity and limited accuracy. The many properties of the environment that are reasonably stable and predictable can, in principle, be described by equations with just this kind of stability, and these are the properties that can be simulated using the computational methods described in this book. [Pg.15]

Another time a friend insisted I go to an appointment she d made for me to see some kind of healer. Not knowing what I was getting into, I went and told the woman what had happened to me. What she told me was the most absurd thing I d ever heard in my life. She said, It s obvious that what has happened to you is that your exposure to the poison paint triggered memories of your most recent life when you were poisoned by mustard gas in World War I in the trenches of France. ... [Pg.73]

I had no support system there, so I started a HEAL chapter. What happened was, I started to get phone calls from people complaining about conditions in their children s schools. I thought maybe this was an area I needed to look into, so I started doing research. Nobody seemed to have any research on sick schools, so I just started collecting case histories from these parents and, eventually, from teachers who felt the school environment compromised their health. And gradually I started finding bits and pieces about the connection between environmental exposure and brain function—short-term memory loss, the ability to access, store and retrieve information, all of that kind of neurobiology as it related to the environment. [Pg.112]

These drawings first and foremost represent states. The same kind of drawing can be used to represent specific implementations of a state. For example, we could decide that each link represents a row in a relation in a relational database or they might be pointers in main memory or they might be rows in a chart at the hotel s front desk. But at the start of a design the most useful way is to say that we don t care yet we re interested in describing the states and not the detail of how they re implemented. We will make the less important representation decisions in due course as the design proceeds. [Pg.73]

Now consider how that gets invoked. If the invoker is another piece of software in the same platform, the procedure call mechanism deals with the message send memory addresses represent the object references. But if the invoker resides on another machine, some kind of remote method invocation must be employed instead of memory addresses, some other kind of identifier must be used for the objects. [Pg.664]

The links are not necessarily pointers in memory They can be database keys, names, or any other kind of handle. [Pg.688]
