Development workshops

Companies may wish to develop workshops to train potential team members in the inherent safety review process. The workshop can provide background information on inherent safety concepts, the extensive systems required to manage hazardous materials, and information on the inherent safety review process. Videos, problems, examples, and team exercises can be included to enliven the education process.

Emotional release needs to be constructive. It can be brought about through confrontation in the here and now , or by using recall, fantasy or role play to create emotionally laden experiences. Development workshops will often make use of such techniques. The emotional release not only enables you to let go of the past, it can also help dispel emotional blocks you may have had to going forward in a new direction. 

Many of the ideas in this book stem from my participation in a series of personal-development workshops run by the former Beilin Partnership (now transformed into Universal Learning). My understanding of how people can develop and change has been deeply Infiuenced by my experiences on those workshops, and their spirit pervades these pages. As neither the Beilin Partnership nor any of its tutors are cited in the references at the end, I acknowledge here their contribution - most especially Graham Browne.

It has been attended by top game designers and executives from Electronic Arts, Sony, Microsoft, Atari, Vivendi Universal Games, Activision, 3D Realms,... 

The results of the interviews and document analysis were used in tailoring the questionnaire (FOCUS, First Organizational Cultural Unified Search by De Witte Van Muijen 1994) to better fit this kind of organisation. Some context-specific questions were also added. The questionnaire was based on the Cameron and Quinn s model (see figure 2). After modifications, the extended FOCUS-questionnaire was distributed to the whole staff of YTO. Response rate was 68 percent, which means 36 subjects. Data was factor analysed and summated scales were formed. In the second phase of the research, a safety culture and development workshop was carried out. The workshop was organised twice so that everybody could have a chance to attend one or the other.

The task force has also recommended to ASSE the development of a Center for Safety and Health Sustainability. Main functions of the center would be to manage the metric index, partner with sustainability organizations, host an annual safety and health sustainability conference, develop a sustainability web site as a resource for EHS pros, develop workshops for professionals and the business community, and produce articles and case studies. 

This is the first of all the guidefines because it is the most important. It also extends across contexts in afigning with relevant stakeholders and constituencies on campus, in faculty development workshops, and in our own classrooms. 

Alternatively, in faculty development workshops and other contexts involving some sustained discussion, it would be prudent to acquaint faculty with multiple SJ definitions, and even ask them to discuss which definitions apply most aptly to particular social justice contexts or scenarios. Faculty in one of our SJ workshops found the given definitions useful but inadequate and created hybrids, pulling concepts from some definitions and grafting them onto others. A sample of SJ definitions is provided in the Appendix. 

It is possible, even plausible, that the apolitical myth, once unveiled, brings to light a more salient underlying issue that as faculty, most of us are woefully unprepared to engage and integrate social justice issues into our disciplines and classrooms. This is in part because bringing personal or political issues into the classroom is still seen as violation of the neutral classroom myth. And perhaps more importantly, SJ education is fraught with inherent complexity. Hence, faculty development workshops serve as critical tools for SJ educators. 

Accident investigation is a common phrase in industrial safety and health, but what does it mean Or more to the point, what does it imply It is a basic job requirement for safety pros, and they attend professional development workshops to improve their skills in this area. Really, what is your assignment when investigating an accident Let us look at the language we are using.
