Going Forward

One company experienced 25 fires or explosions in air-compressor discharge pipework within 35 years. In one of the worst, the fire heated the air going forward into an air receiver, which was lined with bitumen to prevent corrosion. On heating, the bitumen gave off flammable vapors, which exploded, toppling the receiver and demolishing part of a building. 

In addition, the source of sponsorship may differ, reflecting centralized vs. decentralized corporate structures. Thus, it is very important that the petroleum engineer designing a recovery system understand the company s evaluation criteria that will be used by management in judging whether a new project is to go forward. Every chemical reaction can go in either forward or reverse direction. Reactants can go forward to products, and products can revert to reactants. As you may remember from your general chemistry course, the position of the resulting chemical equilibrium is expressed by an equation in which /Cec], the equilibrium constant, is equal to the product concentrations multiplied together, divided by the reactant concentrations multiplied together, with each concentration raised to the power of its coefficient in the balanced equation. When looking at these examples, you can see that verification is very much a retrospective activity, where the objective is to confirm that what has happened is correct. In contrast, validation takes a prospective view, with the objective being to establish confidence that a product or process will work satisfactorily going forward. 

Reversible reaction A reaction that can go forward or backward. Its end point is an equilibrium between reactants and reaction products.

The injected DNA may become part of the sperm DNA. After fusion has occurred, the fertilized egg is allowed to develop into a two-cell embryo, which is then implanted into a female mouse. If the embryo attaches to the uterus, the pregnancy will go forward and healthy pups, or baby mice, will develop. Successful development of transgenic mice is not certain, because only one-third of the embryos placed into a mouse uterus develop into live animals, and only a few may carry the transgene and produce the desired protein.
