Land-Use Management

Careful monitoring of carbon dioxide during the past two decades in Hawaii, Alaska, New York, Sweden, Austria and the South Pole has firmly established that carbon dioxide is steadily increasing in the global atmosphere. This increase is due to anthropogenic activities including fossil fuel combustion. It may also be caused by altered land use management, such as, forest destruction in the tropics.

A possible way to overcome the problem of unknown (or changing) boundary conditions is to integrate and describe possible changes in climate, water and land use management in the form of scenarios, where readily validated models can be used to evaluate the possible impacts on tlie water quantity and quality under scenario conditions.

This natural cycling of water is now perturbed by human activities. Together with changing vegetation patterns due to land-use management (see Chapter 2.6.5.3), these factors complicate the prediction of the consequences of climate change on the global water cycle.
