The various combustion methods differ primarily in the method of measuring the carbon dioxide generated from the organic carbon. The first really sensitive carbon dioxide detector and the one still most used is the non-dispersive infrared gas analyser. The detecting element senses the difference in absorption of infrared energy between a standard cell filled with a gas with no absorption in the infrared, and a sample cell. There are two common types of heat detectors - fixed temperature and rate of rise. Both rely on the heat of a fire incident to activate a signal device. Fixed temperature detectors signal when the detection element is heated to a predetermined temperature point. Rate of rise detectors signal when the temperature rises at a rate exceeding a pre-determined amount. Rate of rise devices can be set to operate rapidly, are effective across a wide range of ambient temperatures, usually recycle rapidly and can tolerate a slow increase in ambient temperatures without providing an alarm. Combination fixed temperature detectors and rate of rise will respond directly to a rapid rise in ambient temperatures caused by fire, will tolerate a slow increase in ambient temperatures without effecting an alarm, and recycle automatically on a drop in ambient temperature. [Pg.179]

Bismuth Molybdates. Bismuth molybdates are used as selective oxidation catalysts. Several phases containing Bi and/or Mo may be mixed together to obtain desired catalytic properties. While selected area electron diffraction patterns can identify individual crystalline particles, diffraction techniques usually require considerable time for developing film and analyzing patterns. X-ray emission spectroscopy in the AEM can identify individual phases containing two detectable elements within a few minutes while the operator is at the microscope. [Pg.314]
