Depression insomnia

Despite the risks of benzodiazepine dependence and overdose among alcoholic patients beyond the period of acute withdrawal, there may be a role for the judicious use of benzodiazepines in treating these patients. To the degree that early relapse, which commonly disrupts alcoholism treatment, is a result of continued withdrawal-related symptoms (e.g., anxiety, depression, insomnia) that can be suppressed by low doses of benzodiazepines, retention in treatment could be enhanced by the use of benzodiazepines (Kissin 1977). Moreover, for some patients, benzodiazepine dependence, if it does occur, may be more benign than alcoholism. [Pg.36]

Saint-John s-wort was used in ancient Greece and medieval Europe, where it was believed to ward off evil spirits. Its name derives from wort, the Old English word for herb, and the fact that it was harvested in Europe on the eve of St. John s day (June 24th) and burned to purify the air (Fleiligenstein and Guenther 1998). Traditional uses include treatment of depression, insomnia, enuresis, and anxiety. Modern use has focused on its antidepressant effects and possible antiviral effects for treatment of the human immunodeficiency virus (FIIV) (Fleiligenstein et al. 1998) (table 7.3). There has been some interest in its antiglioma effects as well (Couldwell et al. 1993). [Pg.258]

Alcohol. Along with several bromide preparations and paraldehyde, alcohol has often been used to relieve anxiety. Due to the marked untoward social and medical consequences of frequent use, alcohol has no place in the treatment of anxiety. Unfortunately, the inappropriate use of alcohol to self-medicate anxiety, depression, insomnia, or other symptoms often leads to alcoholism and therefore contributes to a signihcant public health problem. [Pg.130]

Q68 Benzodiazepines with a short elimination half-life present a less severe withdrawal after drug discontinuation than drugs with a long elimination half-life. Symptoms of benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome include anxiety, depression, insomnia and headache. [Pg.320]

Benzodiazepines with a short half-life are excreted more rapidly than benzodiazepines with a long half-life and hence the risk of severe withdrawal side-effects is higher. Withdrawal symptoms include anxiety, depression, insomnia, headache and hallucinations. [Pg.337]

The possibility that mental illness may be alleviated by biogenic amine precursors is an appealing one (SEDA-4, 18). Tryptophan is a naturally-occurring essential amino acid, which has been advocated as an innocuous health food for the treatment of depression, insomnia, stress, behavioral disorders, and premenstrual syndrome. The availability of amino acids in health food stores and a contemporary interest in natural remedies led to reported widespread use of tryptophan to treat depression. It was estimated in 1976 that up to that time several hundred patients with affective disorders had been studied, with results reported in at least 21 papers (1). However, the results of clinical trials with L-tryptophan in the treatment of depressive disorders are inconsistent (2). [Pg.113]

Many other commonly used antibiotics can cause psychiatric symptoms, for example, clarithromycin (trade name, Biaxin)—which is frequently used to treat respiratory illness, ear infections, and skin infections—has been reported to cause mania in some patients. Metronidazole (trade name Flagyl), which is used to treat many types of infections—from parasites to vaginal infections and abscesses—has been reported to cause depression, agitation, confusion, hallucinations, and mania. Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (trade names Bactrim and Septra)—which is used, for example, for bladder infections and sinus and ear infections—has been reported to cause delirium, psychosis, depression, and hallucinations in rare cases. The fluoroquinolone antibiotics—such as ciprofloxacin (trade name Cipro), levofloxacin (trade name Levaquin), ofloxacin (trade name Floxin), trovafloxacin (trade name Trovan), and others of this class—can cause psychiatric symptoms fairly often, including confusion, agitation, depression, insomnia, mania, paranoia, and psychosis. [Pg.165]
