One example of a liquid-based ion-selective electrode is that for Ca +, which uses a porous plastic membrane saturated with di-(n-decyl) phosphate (Figure 11.13). As shown in Figure 11.14, the membrane is placed at the end of a nonconducting cylindrical tube and is in contact with two reservoirs. The outer reservoir contains di-(n-decyl) phosphate in di- -octylphenylphosphonate, which soaks into the porous membrane. The inner reservoir contains a standard aqueous solution of Ca + and a Ag/AgCl reference electrode. Calcium ion-selective electrodes are also available in which the di-(n-decyl) phosphate is immobilized in a polyvinyl chloride... [Pg.482]

The submitter obtained methyltri-n-octylammonium chloride (Aliquat 336) from General Mills Company, Chemical Division, Kankakee, Illinois. The phase-transfer catalyst used by the checkers, which was supplied by Fluka AG through Tridom Chemical Inc., was a mixture in which the alkyl chains varied in length from re-octyl to re-decyl with the former predominating. [Pg.170]

In the case of 1-dodecyne, reaction with the same dialdehyde in the presence of niobium(V)chloride led to a variety of products, including 2-n-decylnaphthalene (23%), a minor proportion of 2-n-decyl-1-naphthol (14%), 2-n-decylnaphthalene-1,4-diol (2%) and 1-n-dodecene (ref.78). [Pg.42]

Polymer Synthesis. Synthesis of -Alkylacrylamide Copolymers. Hydro-phobic comonomers were synthesized in the following manner. N-n-Octyl-, N-n-decyl-, and N-n-dodecylacrylamides were synthesized by the reaction of acryloyl chloride (0.55 M) with the corresponding alkylamine (0.55 M) in tetrahydrofiiran (THF) at 10 °C with triethylamine (0.60 M) present as the acid receptor. Following filtration of triethylamine hydrochloride and evaporation of THF, the crude product was twice recrystallized in acetone at -25 °C. The products were characterized by elemental analysis, melting point, FTIR and NMR spectroscopy, and gas chromatography. [Pg.439]

Di(2-ethyl hexyl) phthalate (DOP) and diisooctyl phthalate (DIOP) are largely used for PVC and copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate as they have an affinity to these polymers, produce good solvation, and maintain good flexibility of finished products at low temperature. The use of M-octyl-n-decyl phthalate in the production of plastics materials also allows good flexibility and ductility at low temperature. Diisodecyl phthalate (DDP), octyl decyl phthalate (ODP), and dicapryl phthalate (DCP) have a lower solvency and are therefore used in stable PVC pastes. Butyl octyl phthalate (BOP), butyl decyl phthalate (BDP, and butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP) have a good solvency and are used to adjust melt viscosity and fusion time in the production of high-quality foams. They are highly valued for use in expandable plasticized PVC. [Pg.134]
