The Westway case illustrates that powerful political-economic pressures to proceed with a large-scale civil and environmental engineering project can induce technical professionals to engage in a range of deceptive practices that jeopardize public welfare and violate their fundamental ethical responsibilities. [Pg.186]

Cosmetics are not subject to registration or notification, there are pre-shipment testing procedures in force, based on mandatory SASO standards applied equally to both imported and domestically produced products. These encompass the protection of health, safety, national security, public morals, the environment and prevention of deceptive practices. For imported cosmetics, procedures to ensure conformity to the appUcable Saudi standards are enforced by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, which implements the International Conformity Certification Program (ICCP) as a combined conformity assessment, inspection and certification scheme, on the basis of which goods are allowed entry into the KSA. Compliance with the relevant Saudi standards, or approved equivalent international alternatives, leads to the issue of a Certificate of Conformity (CoC) prior to shipment by Country Offices or Regional Licensing Centres. The ICCP apphes to all consumer products exported to the KSA (KSA, 2004). Samples may be selected for minimum verification tests as a part of annual routine inspections. Periodic pre-shipment inspection will be performed. [Pg.24]

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regulates dietary supplement advertising. Perhaps it is my background as a psychotherapist that leads me to be concerned about the widespread practice of deceptively giving patients placebos. As a therapist, I learned that one of the principal factors in the success of treatment is the relationship between the doctor and the patient. Trust is one of the central components of the therapeutic relationship, but trust has to be earned. When it is betrayed, it is lost. So my concern is as much practical as it is ethical. When doctors deceive their patients, they violate their patients trust. In the long run they will lose it and, in so doing, they will lose one of the most effective weapons in their clinical arsenal. [Pg.155]

Some of the states are adopting a Uniform Deceptive Trade Practices Act and a Uniform Trade Secrets Act. As more states adopt a Uniform Trade Secret Act, the laws in the various states tend to become more uniform and predictable. There is a trend towards a more uniform policy and punishment of individuals and organizations that participate in the outright theft of trade secrets. Hopefully this trend will continue. [Pg.48]

These lawsuits and settlements have been joined by more recent allegations of unfair and deceptive trade practices and violations of other codes. Applicators have been found in violation of do-not-call phone advertising restrictions, for example. TruGreen Chemlawn also recently settled with the State of Pennsylvania over allegations that the company added unnecessary surcharges for lawn care services, jacking up prices surreptitiously over time. ... [Pg.85]

Rule No. 5 Consult extension h ore industry Lawn care service providers appear to have an answer for all of your problems. Indeed, their job is to identify problems you didn t even think you hadl Professional services, even the very best and most responsible of them, have a vested interest in selling you products and procedures. Especially deceptive are practices where companies provide free or reduced cost evaluations of the problems you have in your lawn, suggest some apparently inexpensive remedies, and then over time expand... [Pg.140]

To understand both fashion and alchemy we must relate these practices to a concept with which they are both deeply entwined the concept of myth. Fashion and alchemy are both usually seen as unserious practices with neither the social value of the fine arts nor the accuracy of the exact sciences. But myth is neither the opposite of science, nor is it a deception or untrue image of the world. Myths are the powerful imaginative fabrics we weave our world with. Myth does not veil reality but makes it visible, and just like fashion we live our lives inside it. It wraps the world with a holistic threadwork not fragmenting the world into atomized and isolated data but weaving the narratives of the world into visible and tangible shapes. [Pg.3]

In 1998, the Trade Practices Amendment (Country of Origin Representations) Act 1998 came into force. Manufacturers making unqualified statements about country of origin, such as Made in. .. must be able to demonstrate substantial transformation and exceed a 50% production costs threshold. They, therefore, tend to use qualified claims, such as Made in Australia from local and imported ingredients, to ensure that labels are not misleading or deceptive. [Pg.682]

Self-deception and akrasia present severe problems for certain theories of rational agency, problems that have provoked an astonishing exercise of philosophic self-deception in denying the phenomena, redescribing them in ways that attempt to preserve the theories they jeopardize. Such philosophical self-deception is often also accompanied by philosophic akrasia standard practices violate the preferred philosophic theories. [Pg.115]

In practice, inventorship correction in a patent application depends on the circumstances for the correction, but in most cases requires a statement from each person being added and/or deleted that the error occurred without deceptive intent.12 In cases where an inventor or group of inventors refuse to sign such a statement or are otherwise not able to sign, it is possible for the assignee (assuming the invention has been assigned to another party such as an employer) to file a petition to the... [Pg.121]

The primary reason to oppose the filling of the car s gas tank, as it was deceptively, but accurately, described, is simply because it violates the safe practices that has been adopted as standard. The initial question, Would it be an acceptable risk cannot be answered yes based solely on the information given. One would need either to understand the physics, design standards, and routine testing that make fill-up s safe, or to rely on history, which indicates low probability of incident. Without this knowledge, one would have to be conservative and say that gas tank fill-up, as described, is not an acceptable, safe practice. [Pg.193]
