A database management system (DBMS) is used by most LIMS systems for storing data. Examples of commercially available DBMS are DB2, DBASE, Informix, INGRES, ORACLE, and RDB. AH of these DBMS conform to the "relational" model developed by Codd (19). Eigure 3 demonstrates the use of a relational DBMS for storing LIMS data. Here data is grouped by type so customer and analysis requests are stored separately from sets of sample information which are, in turn, stored separately from sets of analysis results. The functions of a model base management system (MBMS), a structure for which is illustrated in Figure 10, are quite analogous to those of a DBMS. The disadvantages include reduction in performance since the data are accessed from a remote system and the difficulty of database optimization. Also, network traffic is increased in a distributed database and different data formats and DBMS products are used in different systems, which increase the complexity of the system. Finally, managing system catalog as well as distributed deadlock is a difficult and time-consuming task. [Pg.240]

Over the last decade or so there have been many commercial DBMS products for managing safety data. Some have survived the rapid rate of change in computer systems and the competition. [Pg.552]
