To date there is no evidence that the toxins of L. ma.iuscula are involved in the development of human cancer. Certainly frequent ingestion of edible seaweeds that are contaminated with L. ma.1uscula could increase the probability of gastrointestinal cancer. There is precedence for this. The black and Creole population of the Caribbean island of Curacao suffers from an exceedingly high rate of esophageal cancer which appears to be related to the daily intake of a tea prepared from the leaves of a... [Pg.374]

Cyanobacteria blooms can pose an extremely serious threat to human health (970-972), and some of the causative toxins contain halogen. The fresh water toxic cyanobacterium Oscillatoria agardhii produces oscillaginin A (916), which features the novel 3-amino-10-chloro-2-hydroxydecanoic acid, and is the source of the micro-cystins, which are heptatoxins (973). The prolific cyanobacterium Lyngbya majuscula from Curacao has furnished the novel barbamide (917) (974) and dechlorobarbamide (918) (975). Extensive biosynthetic studies show that the amino acids leucine, cysteine, and phenylalanine are involved in barbamide production (976-982). The chlorination of leucine is of great interest and may involve a radical mechanism (976, 980-983). [Pg.135]

In Curacao, the major island of the Netherlands Antilles with a population of 130,000 inhabitants, distilled seawater from the water plant was used without further purification for hemodialysis for several decades. Unfortunately, two months before the planned installation of a water treatment system including a reversed osmosis (RO) in the dialysis center Diatel, a new distribution pipe supplying water to a dialysis center on the island was installed in 1996. To protect it from corrosion, this pipe was lined on the inside with a cement mortar. Because of the aggressiveness of the distilled water, calcium and Al leached from the cement mortar into the water used to prepare dialysate. At the time of replacement of the new conduit pipe, 29 patients were dialyzed in the dialysis unit. Patients were dialyzed three times per week during 3.5 to 4.5 hours using hollow fiber kidneys (Fresenius, F6 and F8). Untreated tap... [Pg.4]

Aquaconversion A process for converting heavy crude petroleum oils and residues into lighter products, which are more easily converted into more valuable products in oil refineries. Intended for use at the well head rather than the oil refinery. Three steps are involved thermal dissociation of aromatics, dissociation of water giving hydrogen atoms, and addition of these hydrogen atoms to the aromatic fragments to prevent their association. Developed by Foster Wheeler USA Corporation, Intevep, and UOP from 1998. First commercialized in Curacao, Peru, in 1996. [Pg.22]
