Marchantia brachiata (Sw.) Schiffn. is a liverwort that also enjoys a wide distribution. It is included here to offset the idea that liverworts of wide occurrence need to exhibit different chemistries in order to attract attention. Nagashima et al. (1999) identified four compounds from plants collected in Ecuador 3,4-dimethoxystyrylbenzene [456], 2,4,5-trimethoxystyrylbenzene [457], P-caryophyllene [458], and bicycloger-macrene [459], In the words of those workers, there was ... ostensibly no metabolic differences between Marchantia brachiata collected in the Netherlands Antilles, Saba, and in Ecuador. ... [Pg.231]

At that point, the barge began its search for some nation that would allow it to dock and unload its cargo. Between September 1986 and December 1987, it visited Bermuda, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Guinea-Bissau, and the Netherlands Antilles, all of which refused to accept Philadelphia s wastes. In late 1987, the ship finally received word that the Haitian government had agreed... [Pg.132]

Other important transit countries from the Andean region to Europe are Venezuela, Ecuador and Brazil, and less frequently, the Netherlands Antilles, Suriname, Argentina, Panama and Costa Rica.29 30 Some of these countries also reported dismantling cocaine laboratories (notably Venezuela and Argentina), which could indicate that they are not only transit, but also cocaine manufacturing countries. [Pg.76]

Seizures made in the waters around the Netherlands Antilles (13-7 mt) have subsequently been excluded from the total of seizures made by the Netherlands (21.4 mt) in order to gain a more accurate picture of their geographical location. [Pg.76]

Yes, for sure. But the question is Where to We have run through all kinds of possibilities, from Scandinavia, Scodand, Ireland, to the USA, Canada and the Netherlands Antilles. We drew the conclusion that wherever there are people there will be problems, even just from the combustion gases (stoves and fires, for example) and the chemical substances in the clothes that are worn. In countries other than the Netherlands social isolation would also be an issue. The availability of organic products was also an important issue for me, because in many areas — especially rural areas — they are not widely available. [Pg.66]

In Curacao, the major island of the Netherlands Antilles with a population of 130,000 inhabitants, distilled seawater from the water plant was used without further purification for hemodialysis for several decades. Unfortunately, two months before the planned installation of a water treatment system including a reversed osmosis (RO) in the dialysis center Diatel, a new distribution pipe supplying water to a dialysis center on the island was installed in 1996. To protect it from corrosion, this pipe was lined on the inside with a cement mortar. Because of the aggressiveness of the distilled water, calcium and Al leached from the cement mortar into the water used to prepare dialysate. At the time of replacement of the new conduit pipe, 29 patients were dialyzed in the dialysis unit. Patients were dialyzed three times per week during 3.5 to 4.5 hours using hollow fiber kidneys (Fresenius, F6 and F8). Untreated tap... [Pg.4]

In a retrospective study in a psychiatric hospital in Curasao, Netherlands Antilles, 133 Afro-Caribbean inpatients (mean age 52 years), with no organic disorders and a history of current use of neuroleptic drugs for at least 3 months, were assessed for tardive dyskinesia (291). The prevalence was 36%. When the number of interruptions to neuroleptic drug therapy was split into up to two and more than two, the resulting adjusted odds ratio was 3.29 (95% Cl = 1.27, 8.49). Thus, the number of interruptions turned out to be the second risk factor after age. Cumulative dosages of neuroleptic or anticholinergic drugs were not risk factors. [Pg.210]

In Central America and the Caribbean, a regional and sub-regional focus is showing results, to the point that only one State not Party remains in Central America (Honduras) and a handful of island states in the Caribbean (Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Dominican Repubhc and Haiti). Recent universality-related activities in the region have been held with the involvement of representatives from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the Netherlands Antilles and the Secretariat of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), as well as the UN Regional Centre for Peace, Disarmament and Development, based in Lima, Peru. [Pg.167]

This has been confirmed in a 2-year study on the island of Curasao in the Netherlands Antilles, where cocaine and cannabis are often abused (168). The sample consisted of 29 men with neuroleptic-induced acute dystonias aged 17-45 years who had received high potency neuroleptic drugs in the month before admission 9 were cocaine users and 20 non-users. Cocaine use was a major risk factor for neuroleptic-induced acute dystonia and should be added to the list of well-known risk factors such as male sex, younger age, neuroleptic dose and... [Pg.2473]
