Creep, defined

The relaxation and creep experiments that were described in the preceding sections are known as transient experiments. They begin, run their course, and end. A different experimental approach, called a dynamic experiment, involves stresses and strains that vary periodically. Our concern will be with sinusoidal oscillations of frequency v in cycles per second (Hz) or co in radians per second. Remember that there are 2ir radians in a full cycle, so co = 2nv. The reciprocal of CO gives the period of the oscillation and defines the time scale of the experiment. In connection with the relaxation and creep experiments, we observed that the maximum viscoelastic effect was observed when the time scale of the experiment is close to r. At a fixed temperature and for a specific sample, r or the spectrum of r values is fixed. If it does not correspond to the time scale of a transient experiment, we will lose a considerable amount of information about the viscoelastic response of the system. Table 1 is condensed from Handbook 44. It Hsts the number of divisions allowed for each class, eg, a Class III scale must have between 100 and 1,200 divisions. When a fiber is stressed, the instantaneous elongation that occurs is defined as instantaneous elastic deformation. The subsequent delayed additional elongation that occurs with increasing time is creep deformation. Upon stress removal, the instantaneous recovery that occurs is called instantaneous elastic recovery and is approximately equal to the instantaneous elastic deformation. If the subsequent creep recovery is 100%, ie, equal to the creep deformation, the specimen exhibits primary creep only and is thus completely elastic. In such a case, the specimen has probably not been extended beyond its yield point. If after loading and load removal, the specimen fails to recover to its original length, the portion of creep deformation that is recoverable is still called primary creep the portion that is nonrecoverable is called secondary creep. This nonrecoverable elongation is typically called permanent set. [Pg.455]

Dimensional Stability. Dimensional stabiHty refers to how a fiber changes length under the influence of load or heat. Conventionally described in terms of fiber shrinkage (ASTM D885-64) at a defined temperature, the term has also come to mean time dependent length change or creep. [Pg.83]

Product performance data Products subjected to a given load develop a corresponding predictable deformation. If it continues to increase without any increase in load or stress, the material is said to be experiencing creep or cold flow. Creep in any product is defined as increasing strain over time in the presence of a constant stress (Figs. 2-25 and 26). Linear viscoelasticity Linear viscoelastic theory and its application to static stress analysis is now developed. According to this theory, material is linearly viscoelastic if, when it is stressed below some limiting stress (about half the short-time yield stress), small strains are at any time almost linearly proportional to the imposed stresses. Portions of the creep data typify such behavior and furnish the basis for fairly accurate predictions concerning the deformation of plastics when subjected to loads over long periods of time. It should be noted that linear behavior, as defined, does not always persist throughout the time span over which the data are acquired i.e., the theory is not valid in nonlinear regions and other prediction methods must be used in such cases. [Pg.113]

The example of the roof structure represents the simplest type of problem in static loading in that the loads are clearly long term and well defined. Before briefly discussing each type it is necessary to consider the performance of thermoplastic elastomers, and the problem of defining service temperature limits for them. The structural features that convey the ability to be processed as a thermoplastic are also a limiting factor in their use. Since it is the pseudocrosslinks that allow these materials to develop elastomeric behaviour, any factor which interferes with the integrity of the pseudocrosslinks will weaken the material, and allow excessive creep or stress relaxation to occur under the sustained application of stress and strain.
