The construction of the SPEEDI network was started in 1986, in order to establish the data communication lines between the SPEEDI operations center, the Science and Technology Agency (STA) and prefectural governments in which nuclear plants are placed, according to a national plan for the improvement of the national emergency countermeasure system in Japan. 

Applications. Information gathering devices emit RF radiation. The devices include radar (air and ground), transponders, motion detectors, projectile tracking, surveillance, and many additional types of information gathering devices. Broadcast devices include radio and satellite communication terminals and electronic countermeasures systems. 

In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in the deployment of software in safety-related and safety-critical systems. If we consider a specific category within safety-critical systems for illustration, military aircraft, it is evident that the ongoing requirements for increased functionality and capability have resulted in dramatic growth in the number and complexity of avionics and mission systems in order to provide air superiority over potential adversaries. These mission systems include, but are not limited to, head-up displays (HUD), digital map displays, sensor systems, retina-tracking target-designation systems, and electronic countermeasures systems.

There are two traditional approaches to collecting and analyzing human factors data related to driving. The first approach is to use data gathered through epidemiological studies (often collected on a national level). These databases, however, lack sufficient detail to be helpful for many applications, such as the development of countermeasure systems or the assessment of interactions between causal and contributing factors that lead to crashes.

As discussed in the introduction, boiler water (BW) treatment programs enable the waterside chemistry of boilers and their associated systems to be controlled within certain agreed upon and relevant parameters and specifications. They provide a countermeasure against a wide range of adverse conditions that may strive to develop and hinder efficient boiler operation or cause serious damage. 

Deterrence A countermeasures strategy that is intended to prevent or discourage the occurrence of a breach of security by means of fear or doubt. Physical security systems such as warning signs, lights, uniformed guards, cameras, and bars are examples of countermeasures that provide deterrence. 

Countermeasures are actions taken to reduce or eliminate one or more vulnerabilities. Countermeasures include hardware, technical systems, software, interdictive response, procedures, and administrative controls.

The measurement of screening performance of smokes is important because smoke screens are one of the countermeasures for IR surveillance systems. The performance of smoke formulations is decided in terms of total obscuring power (TOP), yield factor (Y), mass extinction coefficient (a) followed by calculation of obscuration effectiveness (a. Y. p). These parameters are defined in the following manner. 

The Walter Reed Army Institute of Research s Department of Behavioral Biology has developed a field-deployable version of a commercial Psychomotor Vigilance Task (PVT) that has been widely used in sleep research. The software runs on handheld PDAs running the Palm Operating System (Palm OS). It is modeled after the simple reaction time task of Wilkinson and Houghton,57 as modified by Dinges and Powell.58 The Palm OS version incorporates additional stimulus, feedback, control, and data options developed by Dr. Thome. In laboratory studies, performance on the PDA task has been shown to be sensitive to time-on-task fatigue effects, sleep deprivation, and circadian variation.18 Field studies have utilized the PVT to measure the efficacy of caffeine gum as a sleep loss countermeasure.
