According to mixed-potential theory, any overall electrochemical reaction can be algebraically divided into half-cell oxidation and reduction reactions, and there can be no net electrical charge accumulation [J7], For open-circuit corrosion in the absence of an applied potential, the oxidation of the metal and the reduction of some species in solution occur simultaneously at the metal/electrolyte interface, as described by Eq 14, Under these circumstances, the net measurable current density, t pp, is zero. However, a finite rate of corrosion defined by t con. occurs at anodic sites on the metal surface, as indicated in Fig. 1. When the corrosion potential, Eco ., is located at a potential that is distincdy different from the reversible electrode potentials (E dox) of either the corroding metal or the species in solution that is cathodically reduced, the oxidation of cathodic reactants or the reduction of any metallic ions in solution becomes negligible. Because the magnitude of at E is the quantity of interest in the corroding system, this parameter must be determined independendy of the oxidation reaction rates of other adsorbed or dissolved reactants. [Pg.108]

Equation (F.l) shows that each stream makes a contribution to total heat transfer area defined only by its duty, position in the composite curves, and its h value. This contribution to area means also a contribution to capital cost. If, for example, a corrosive stream requires special materials of construction, it will have a greater contribution to capital cost than a similar noncorrosive stream. If only one cost law is to be used for a network comprising mixed materials of construction, the area contribution of streams requiring special materials must somehow increase. Wettabihty is defined as the tendency of one fluid to spread on or adhere to a soHd surface (rock) in the presence of other immiscible fluids (5). As many as 50% of all sandstone reservoirs and 80% of all carbonate reservoirs are oil-wet (10). Strongly water-wet reservoirs are quite rare (11). Rock wettabihty can affect fluid injection rates, flow patterns of fluids within the reservoir, and oil displacement efficiency (11). Rock wettabihty can strongly affect its relative permeabihty to water and oil (5,12). When rock is water-wet, water occupies most of the small flow channels and is in contact with most of the rock surfaces as a film. Cmde oil does the same in oil-wet rock. Alteration of rock wettabihty by adsorption of polar materials, such as surfactants and corrosion inhibitors, or by the deposition of polar cmde oil components (13), can strongly alter the behavior of the rock (12). [Pg.188]

Techniques for handling sodium in commercial-scale appHcations have improved (5,23,98,101,102). Contamination by sodium oxide is kept at a minimum by completely welded constmction and inert gas-pressured transfers. Residual oxide is removed by cold traps or micrometallic filters. Special mechanical pumps or leak-free electromagnetic pumps and meters work well with clean Hquid sodium. Corrosion of stainless or carbon steel equipment is minimi2ed by keeping the oxide content low. The 8-h TWA PEL and ceiling TLV for sodium or sodium oxide or hydroxide smoke exposure is 2 mg/m. When the design temperatures are significantly below ambient temperature, the primary threat to tank integrity is failure of the material by britde fracture. The tank design codes usually provide thorough treatment of this topic to prevent catastrophic failure. SCC has been defined as failure by cracking under the combined action of corrosion and stress (Fig. 9.1). The stress and corrosion components interact S3mergistically to produce cracks, which initiate on the surface exposed to the corrodent and propagate in response to the stress state. They may run in any direction but are always perpendicular to the principal stress. Longitudinal or transverse crack orientations in tubes are common (Figs. 9.2 and 9.3). Occasionally, both longitudinal and transverse cracks are present on the same tube (Fig. 9.4). Less frequently, SCC is a secondary result of another primary corrosion mode. At and near room temperature, metals have well-defined, almost constant, moduli and yield strengths (in contrast to polymers, which do not). And most metallic alloys have a ductility of 20% or better. Certain high-strength alloys (spring steel, for instance) and components made by powder methods, have less - as little as 2%.
