Storage Considerations

The end product specification of a process may be defined by a customer (e.g. gas quality), by transport requirements (e.g. pipeline corrosion protection), or by storage considerations (e.g. pour point). Product specifications normally do not change, and one may be expected to deliver within narrow tolerances, though specification can be subject to negotiation with the customer, for example In gas contracts. 

The formulation presented in this chapter provides a means to take different storage considerations into account. The methodology is capable of dealing with multiple contaminants and determines the minimum wastewater target in such a system as well as the corresponding schedule.

Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are compiled and available for all chemicals. These documents explain the inhalation and contact health risks, as well as the flammability and toxicity of the chemical they describe. They also outline special handling and storage considerations. After samples are processed they are frequently stored temporarily at the collection site until being shipped for analysis or long-term storage. Consideration should be given to what temperature is acceptable for temporary storage. Many sites only have -20°C freezers. The impact of storage at -20 versus -80°C should be assessed in advance to selecting clinical sites. The ability of the site to monitor the freezer temperatures where sample will be stored should also be evaluated.
