The selection of materials to be used in design dictates a basic understanding of the behavior of materials and the principles that govern such behavior. If proper design of suitable materials of construction is incorporated, the eqiiipment should deteriorate at a uniform and anticipated gradual rate, which will allow scheduled maintenance or replacement at regular inteivals. If localized forms of corrosion are characteristic of the combination of materials and environment, the materials engineer should still be able to predict the probable life of equipment, or devise an appropriate inspection schedule to preclude unexpected failures. The concepts of predictive, or at least preventive, maintenance are minimum requirements to proper materials selection. The use of impedance electrochemical techniques to study corrosion mechanisms and to determine corrosion rates is an emerging technology. The concept of the corrosion process, derived from the Latin corrodere (to eat away, to destroy), first appeared in the Philosophical Transactions in 1667 [2]. It was discussed in a German translation from the French on the manufacture of white lead in 1785 and was mentioned in 1836 in the translation of an English paper by Davy on the cathodic protection of iron in seawater [3]. However, almost until the present day, the term was used indiscriminately for corrosion reaction, corrosion effects, and corrosion damage. Electrochemical corrosion is understood to include all corrosion processes that can be influenced electrically. This is the case for all the types of corrosion described in this handbook and means that data on corrosion velocities (e.g., removal rate, penetration rate in pitting corrosion, or rate of pit formation, time to failure of stressed specimens in stress corrosion) are dependent on the potential U [5]. Potential can be altered by chemical action (influence of a redox system) or by electrical factors (electric currents), thereby reducing or enhancing the corrosion. Corrosion likelihood describes the expected corrosion rates or the expected extent of corrosion effects over a planned useful life [14]. Accurate predictions of corrosion rates are not possible, due to the incomplete knowledge of the parameters of the system and, most of all, to the stochastic nature of local corrosion. Figure 4-3 gives schematic information on the different states of corrosion of extended objects (e.g., buried pipelines) according to the concepts in Ref. 15. The arrows represent the current densities of the anode and cathode partial reactions at a particular instant. It must be assumed that two narrowly separated arrows interchange with each other periodically in such a way that they exist at both fracture locations for the same amount of time. Since the reliability of gas turbines in the power industry has been lower than desired in recent years because of hot-corrosion problems, techniques have been developed to detect and control the parameters that cause these problems. By monitoring the water content and corrosive contaminant in the fuel line, any changes in fuel quality can be noted and corrective measures initiated. The concept here is that Na contaminants in the fuel are caused from external sources such as seawater thus, by monitoring water content, Na content is automatically being monitored. This on-line technique is adequate for lighter distillate fuels. For heavier fuels, a more complete analysis of the fuel should be carried out at least once a month using the batch-type system. The data should be input directly to the computer. The water and corrosion detecting systems also operate in conjunction with the batch analysis for the heavier fuels. [Pg.671]

Many factors and conditions affect the tendency of metals to corrode. Once the right conditions and all the components are present, corrosion may proceed in one or more forms. Before considering the aforementioned points, it is necessary to consider the concepts of polarization and passivity. [Pg.1262]

Figure 4-419 illustrates the concept of corrosion process under concentration polarization control. Considering hydrogen evolution at the cathode, reduction rate of hydrogen ions is dependent on the rate of diffusion of hydrogen ions to the metal surface. In the case of non-metallic materials, the term corrosion invariably refers to their-deterioration from chemical causes, but a similar concept is not necessarily applicable to metals. Although the mechanism of corrosion is highly complex the actual control of the majority of corrosion reactions can be effected by the application of relatively simple concepts. It should be noted that Fig. 1.15 (top) is based entirely on thermodynamic data and is therefore correctly described as an equilibrium diagram, since it shows the phases (nature and activity) that exist at equilibrium. However, the concepts implicit in the terms corrosion, immunity and passivity lie outside the realm of thermodynamics, and, for example, passivity involves both thermodynamic and kinetic concepts it follows that Fig. 1.15 (bottom) cannot be regarded as a true equilibrium diagram, although it is based on one that has been constructed entirely from thermodynamic data. [Pg.67]
