Core capabilities

The industry is increasingly acknowledging the value of oontractors and service companies in improving their individual core capabilities through alliances, i.e. a joint venture for a particular project or a number of projects. A lead contractor e.g. a drilling company may form alliances with a number of sub contractors to be able to cover a wider spectrum of activities e.g. completions, workovers and well interventions. 

Two fibers are presently produced by CVD on a commercial scale boron and silicon carbide. The production of these two fibers requires a monofilament starter core capable of being heated resistively such as a tungsten or graphite fiber. Zimmerman and Moore recently reported on dendrimers with hydrogen bonding units at the focal point [187]. Two classes of dendritic hosts were synthesized with naphthyridine units in the core capable of hydrogen bonding benzamidinium derivatives (Figure 16.14).

In this era of restricted headcount (and for any major project) it is common to bring in outside assistance to do some or all of the work. This is certainly acceptable, but firms should maintain some degree of internal expertise to oversee any external support. Once the validation project is completed, the firm is required to maintain the validated state. This is only possible when the core capabilities exist within the firm. The use of prepared forms for data entry during execution can be useful as a means to ensure that the correct information is gathered and promptly recorded. 

There is no denying the personnel component of product quality. Issues such as training, personnel turnover, staff s core capabilities and knowledge, job expectations, personnel motivation, and leadership all contribute to overall quality and product integrity.

These companies have created core capabilities in areas other than production. They have, for example, used superior deal-making and human resources skills to expand rapidly. Moreover, they have focused their businesses by acquiring and merging business units from less focused competitors. With these, they have built up powerful positions in product innovation or cost leadership - hke that of Nova, for example, in polystyrene. 

Enter new parts of the value chain, typically downstream elements closer to the end consumer. Downstream players often add significant value to the product just before it gets to the end consumer. If specialty chemical companies can enter these parts of the value chain by leveraging their existing business models and core capabilities, they can capture a piece of this additional value. However, this proposition may prove difficult, since the downstream markets are often very different from chemical ones. They are, for example, extremely fragmented, and they have to cope with frequently changing consumer tastes. 

Biomimetic sensing and rapid molecular identification and characterization are not revolutionary concepts. They are as much a desirable attribute today as they will be in the future. To be most effective, research on these core capabilities should...

In light of these anticipated workload reductions, and with the welfare of its employees in mind, British Energy had devised various human resource plans, such as early retirement offers and advance layoff notices, to facilitate the eventual downsizing. For some capabilities. T E requires use of actual agent institutions other than DoD laboratories may be well suited to do the work but would need to do so in close collaboration with DoD.
