Once finalized the nearly 32 billion deal will mean that the new company will own and operate 14 nuclear units...not counting AmerGen-PECO Energy s joint venture with British Energy—that is in the process of purchasing six additional nuclear units so far.

Responsibility for commercial reactor fuel storage rests with British Nuclear Fuels pic as the current owner of the Magnox NPPs and Sellafield, and British Energy owner of the AGR NPPs and the Sizewell PWR. The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has responsibility for naval fuel. 

The majority of SNF in the UK is stored in water filled pools. A significant proportion of this fuel has been, or will be, reprocessed. Research has demonstrated that longer term storage of stainless steel or Zircalloy clad fuel is feasible and it is now planned for some fuel from British Energy NPPs to be stored for the foreseeable future.

Nuclear power and deregulated electricity markets lessons from British Energy... 

This episode, and the contrast between the company s initial success and subsequent financial collapse, offer an interesting case study in the viability of nuclear power in a deregulated market. But the facts do not support a simple conclusion that nuclear power cannot survive in such markets. A restructured British Energy Group pic was re-listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2005 and continues to trade, albeit with a lot of volatility owing to unreliable power station availability. 

After an initial failed attempt to privatize nuclear power with the rest of the British electricity industry in 1990, the government put the nuclear stations into two state-owned companies. Nuclear Electric for the English and Welsh stations, and Scottish Nuclear for the Scottish stations. In 1995 the more modern advanced gas cooled reactor (AGR) stations plus the new pressurized water reactor (PWR) at Sizewell were privatized in the form of a new company, British Energy pic. The older Magnox reactors were retained in a company called Magnox Electric.

Nuclear power is commercially more exposed to commodity price risk because it has high fixed costs. If nuclear liabilities are regarded (as they should be) as de facto debt, then British Energy (BE) also had high financial leverage. This made the company s profitability highly sensitive to the price of power.
