Drilling company

The industry is increasingly acknowledging the value of oontractors and service companies in improving their individual core capabilities through alliances, i.e. a joint venture for a particular project or a number of projects. A lead contractor e.g. a drilling company may form alliances with a number of sub contractors to be able to cover a wider spectrum of activities e.g. completions, workovers and well interventions. 

When a well is making (formation) gas, the rig crews must be constantly alert to safety and proper safety procedures, and rules must be followed. Nearly all drilling companies strictly forbid any smoking material, lighters or matches to be taken into the areas where air (or gas) is being used to drill a well for hydrocarbons [75].

The DOE states that horizontal well installation costs have steadily decreased in recent years due to technical improvements and increased experience of drilling companies (D168585, p. 10). Most horizontal wells are installed at private industry sites, so performance information and cost data are not commonly available (D22909O, p. 2).

Thereafter, you need have no more to do with the process of developing a water system than writing checks for the hardware...

The point is that people working in complex systems such as an oil company or a well-drilling company make errors that go beyond the scope of individual psychology. This is what Reason calls latent conditions ... 

Behavior-based safety is the result of work by behavior psychologists over the years. Using the techniques from applied psychology, psychologists used combinations of behavior analysis to study industrial performance. In 1979, Thomas Krause, a psychologist and John Hindley, a psychiatrist, examined methods in which psychology could be applied to off-shore oil drilling companies in an effort to improve safety performance (Krause 2001, 28). With the majority of accidents in the workplace due to unsafe acts, a premise of behavior-based safety approach is that identification and removal of motivators of unsafe behaviors and the reinforcement of safe behaviors should improve safety performance in the workplace.

In each of the cases described below, the companies had previously used the elements of traditional safety programs. In one example of improvement, on changing in 1980 to a behavioral approach, a major U.S. drilling company reduced its Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recordable injury rate by 48 percent and moved from the industry average to being one of the industry s top five safety performers. This improvement was achieved through a management-driven behavioral approach even without the levels of employee involvement typical of current implementation efforts (Fig. 1.1).

Alexander L. Kielland was a Norwegian semisubmersible rig/platform in the Ekofisk oil field, Norwegian continental shelf, about 235 miles east of Dundee, Scotland, United Kingdom. The rig/platform was named after a Norwegian writer, and it was owned by the Stavanger Drilling Company of Norway. At the time of the occurrence of the disaster, the rig/platform was hired by the United States Company called Phillips Petroleum.
