Methyl methacrylate - methacrylic acid copolymers

Acrylics. Acetone is converted via the intermediate acetone cyanohydrin to the monomer methyl methacrylate (MMA) [80-62-6]. The MMA is polymerized to poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) to make the familiar clear acryUc sheet. PMMA is also used in mol ding and extmsion powders. Hydrolysis of acetone cyanohydrin gives methacrylic acid (MAA), a monomer which goes direcdy into acryUc latexes, carboxylated styrene—butadiene polymers, or ethylene—MAA ionomers. As part of the methacrylic stmcture, acetone is found in the following major end use products acryUc sheet mol ding resins, impact modifiers and processing aids, acryUc film, ABS and polyester resin modifiers, surface coatings, acryUc lacquers, emulsion polymers, petroleum chemicals, and various copolymers (see METHACRYLIC ACID AND DERIVATIVES METHACRYLIC POLYMERS). [Pg.99]

In fact, the copolymers of methacrylic acid with maleic anhydride (14) and the copolymers of vinyl alcohol with maleic anhydride (127) obtained respectively from optically active (l-methyl-benzyl)-methacrylate or (l-methyl-benzyl)-vinyl-ether and maleic anhydride, were optically active, but their rotatory power was rather small. [Pg.437]

The cation exchanger, CB-4, consists of a copolymer of methyl methacrylic acid and divinylbenzene (DVB). [Pg.151]

Preparation Procedures. Preparation Procedure I. In a 6-1 stirring vessel, 2000 g deionized water, 600 g LDPE, 80 ml 10% dispersant solution (1 1 copolymer of methacrylic acid and methyl methacrylate), 490 g styrene, and 8 g radical former were stirred under nitrogen with conditions as indicated in Table I. Subsequently the pellets were collected on a suction filter, washed with plenty of water, and dried for 48-72 hrs in vacuo at 50°C. The styrene content of the pellets was determined from the weight increase of the pellets ... [Pg.232]

A number of methods such as ultrasonics (137), radiation (138), and chemical techniques (139—141), including the use of polymer radicals, polymer ions, and organometaUic initiators, have been used to prepare acrylonitrile block copolymers (142). Block comonomers include styrene, methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, 4-vinylpyridine, acryUc acid, and -butyl isocyanate. [Pg.197]

Acryhc stmctural adhesives have been modified by elastomers in order to obtain a phase-separated, toughened system. A significant contribution in this technology has been made in which acryhc adhesives were modified by the addition of chlorosulfonated polyethylene to obtain a phase-separated stmctural adhesive (11). Such adhesives also contain methyl methacrylate, glacial methacrylic acid, and cross-linkers such as ethylene glycol dimethacrylate [97-90-5]. The polymerization initiation system, which includes cumene hydroperoxide, N,1S7-dimethyl- -toluidine, and saccharin, can be apphed to the adherend surface as a primer, or it can be formulated as the second part of a two-part adhesive. Modification of cyanoacrylates using elastomers has also been attempted copolymers of acrylonitrile, butadiene, and styrene ethylene copolymers with methylacrylate or copolymers of methacrylates with butadiene and styrene have been used. However, because of the extreme reactivity of the monomer, modification of cyanoacrylate adhesives is very difficult and material purity is essential in order to be able to modify the cyanoacrylate without causing premature reaction. [Pg.233]
