This issue has been investigated using amalgam cathodes, and the indications are that the cryptand has negligible influence on the rate of incorporation of a sodium ion into the amalgam (Chen et ai, 1991 Doan et al, 1991). One of the most interesting applications of the cryptands is that they increase the mobility of dipositive ions in polymer electrolytes (Chen and Shriver, 1991). [Pg.115]

The mobility of the ions in polymer electrolytes is linked to the local segmental mobility of the polymer chains. Significant ionic conductivity in these systems will occur only above the glass transition temperature of the amorphous phase, Tg. Therefore, one of the reqnirements for the polymeric solvent is a low glass-transition temperature for example, Tg = —67°C for PEO. [Pg.589]

In studies where a knowledge of the diffusion of metallic ions in polymers is important, one often wishes to measure a profile of the concentration as a function of depth. Neutron activation cannot be used to measure these profiles directly, but if the sample can be cut into thin slices with a microtome, these can be analysed individually to construct the profile. In our laboratory this technique is used extensively to study the migration of ions into the polyethylene insulation of high-voltage cables (10). These impurities contribute to the degradation with use of the electrical properties of the cable. [Pg.134]

The present chapter deals with the use of infrared spectroscopy in radiation chemistry. After an historical introduction and the presentation of the basic knowledge needed in infrared spectroscopy, we describe the major milestones of its implementation within that field. Section 3 describes the use of infrared spectroscopy in astrophysics. Starting in the 1980s, such studies aim at characterizing the sample s modifications after irradiation. Section 4 describes the implementation of infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (IR-RAS) and its use in understanding the radiation-induced surface chemistry. Section 5 is focused on the chemistry induced by swift heavy ions in polymers. Section 6 presents recent developments that enable us to perform... [Pg.201]

The estimate on the complexation modes provided by the above thermodynamic approach should be verified by other experimental approaches. Spectroscopic measurements are expected to give straightforward evidence for the coordination state of a metal ion in polymer ligand systems. The... [Pg.853]
