Cooling Arrangement

IsoValeric acid. Prepare dilute sulphuric acid by adding 140 ml. of concentrated sulphuric acid cautiously and with stirring to 85 ml. of water cool and add 80 g. (99 ml.) of redistilled woamyl alcohol. Place a solution of 200 g. of crystallised sodium dicliromate in 400 ml. of water in a 1-litre (or 1-5 litre) round-bottomed flask and attach an efficient reflux condenser. Add the sulphuric acid solution of the isoamyl alcohol in amaU portions through the top of the condenser shake the apparatus vigorously after each addition. No heating is required as the heat of the reaction will suffice to keep the mixture hot. It is important to shake the flask well immediately after each addition and not to add a further portion of alcohol until the previous one has reacted if the reaction should become violent, immerse the flask momentarily in ice water. The addition occupies 2-2-5 hours. When all the isoamyl alcohol has been introduced, reflux the mixture gently for 30 minutes, and then allow to cool. Arrange the flask for distillation (compare Fig. II, 13, 3, but with the thermometer omitted) and collect about 350 ml. of distillate. The latter consists of a mixture of water, isovaleric acid and isoamyl isovalerate. Add 30 g. of potassium not sodium) hydroxide pellets to the distillate and shake until dissolved. Transfer to a separatory funnel and remove the upper layer of ester (16 g.). Treat the aqueous layer contained in a beaker with 30 ml. of dilute sulphuric acid (1 1 by volume) and extract the liberated isovaleric acid with two... [Pg.355]

If the temperature rise, as determined above, exceeds permissible limits it will be desirable to provide extra louvres, a forced cooling arrangement, larger busbars or a change in their configuration whichever is more convenient and easy to implement. [Pg.429]

Such types of loads may require special design of capacitor elements and their dielectric impregnation, cooling arrangement, size of shell or surface treatment. For all these applications therefore it is important to know the actual operating conditions, behaviour and characteristic of the load and its duty cycle before selecting the capacitors. [Pg.818]

In fact, it is the solar effect that is causing the maximum heat. The factors considered for the solar effect are also highly conservative. Nevertheless, a canopy over the outdoor part is advisable in the above case. This will ensure the same size of enclosure for the outdoor as well as the indoor parts and also eliminate the requirement for a thicker enclosure or a forced cooling arrangement. Now there will be no direct solar radiation over the bus system and the total solar effect can be eliminated, except for substituting the indoor ambient temperature of 48 C with the maximum outdoor temperature for the outdoor part of the bus system. [Pg.948]

A cooling-water pond is the simplest form of cooling arrangement. The pond should be located so that an unrestricted air circulation is obtained. Vaporizing ability is improved if the hot water is returned to the pond by some kind of sprinkler device. Most of the cooling effect is caused by vaporization and the water thus lost must be replaced. Cooling ponds should not be used in heavily contaminated atmospheres. [Pg.549]

For the smaller air-cooled, oil diffusion pumps, plate baffles are used. The air-cooled arrangement consists of a copper plate with copper webs to the housing wall. The temperature of the plate baffle remains nearly ambient during the operation of the diffusion pump. [Pg.44]

Typical batch reactors for kinetic studies of liquid-phase reactions at ambient and elevated pressures are shown in Figures 3.1 and 3.2, respectively. They are equipped with stirrer, heating or cooling arrangement, temperature sensor, reflux condenser, and sampling ports. [Pg.33]

In this set-up, impure substance is taken in an evaporating dish which is covered with a perforated asbestos plate over which is placed an inverted funnel. The dish is heated on a sand bath to avoid overheating which would be caused by the use of a direct flame. Heating yields vapours of the pure compound which is recovered as a solid deposited on the inside walls of the funnel provided with cooling arrangement as shown in Figure 2.8. The perforated asbestos sheet prevents the sublimate from falling back into the impure material. [Pg.20]

A basic understanding of the hydrocarbon and chemical processes and their supporting utilities e.g. compression, pumping, control and operation, cooling arrangements. [Pg.18]

Design of a handle determines to a great extent its service life. Quite often handles are found fastened directly to the hot object without regard for any temperature limitation at the junction the plastic becomes brittle because of high temperature, and failure occurs. If the handle can be separated from the heated part and some cooling arrangement is included as part of the design, improved performance is to be expected. [Pg.363]

The first phase consists of determining the mold principle. It is also often called qualitative design. This phase includes the decision on whether to use a single-cavity or multi-cavity mold, for example, or which type of mold (standard- or spUts-mold, article ejection or other form of removal, heating/cooling arrangement) is to be employed. [Pg.90]

Crystallizers similar to the Swenson-Walker type with semi-cylindrical (U-type) or nearly cylindrical (0-type) cross-section have been used for many years in the sugar industry for the crystallization of concentrated molasses. Units fitted with water-cooled jacket are still employed, but these show poor heat transfer characteristics scraper-stirrers are not permitted on account of the damage they do to the crystals. Accordingly, many other types of cooling arrangement have been tried (Seavoy and Caldwell, 1940). [Pg.373]

In the reactor forming the subject matter of the present invention, the coolant is passed over the exterior surfaces of the uranium. For purposes of convenience, such an arrangement will be identified as an externally cooled gg structure. This will serve to distinguish from the internally cooled arrangement where the coolant passes through a central longitudinal passage in the uranium bodies. [Pg.678]
