Continuity of purpose

The synthetic methods that have been employed for the preparation of the cycloproparenes fall into two distinct categories, namely those that commence with a preformed aromatic moiety to which is appended a three-membered ring, and those that build the molecular framework prior to aromatization. The sections that follow have been composed to provide a continuity of purpose rather than a strict division between these two axiomatic methodologies. [Pg.710]

The published work of Hudson and associates is characterized by a continuity of purpose that is remarkable. Hudson never deviated from his objective of carrying out fundamental investigations of his own choosing in the carbohydrate field. He never allowed any of his efforts to be integrated into the exploitation of a crop or of a disease neither would he be diverted by programs devised by research planners or Bureau chiefs. Although interested in theory, Hudson was essentially an observer. He was ever alert to the unexpected and unusual, hoping thereby to open new vistas. [Pg.437]

You may be taking samples which you will pass on to an analytical laboratory for analysis or you may be going to analyse them yourself. In either case there has to be a clear continuity of purpose from the sampling, through the analytical stages to the final report and conclusions. Bear in mind that the analytical result may depend on the... [Pg.31]

Electrical, electronic, and technical appHcations use polycarbonates for a variety of purposes. The woddwide market is about 156,000 t aimuaHy. Because of exceHent electrical properties (dielectric strength, volume resistivity), and resistance to heat and humidity, polycarbonate is used for electrical connectors (qv), telephone network devices, oudet boxes, etc. Polycarbonate had been popular for use in computer and business machine housings, but the use of neat resin has been largely supplanted by blends of polycarbonate with ABS. OveraH, however, the total use of polycarbonate continues to increase. [Pg.285]

A minimum of 10 to 35 parts carbon black to 100 parts of mbber is required to obtain a resistivity in the order of 10 Q-cm. At that loading the carbon black particles, which have an average radius of 10 nm, form grapelike aggregates that provide continuous paths for the electrical current. Special purpose mbbers containing even more carbon black have resistances as low as 1 Q-cm (129). The electrical resistivity of mbber with carbon black is sensitive to strain history, probably because of temporary dismptions of the continuity of the carbon black aggregates. [Pg.296]

The chromatographic column has a dichotomy of purpose. During a separation, two processes ensue in the column, continuously, progressively and virtually independent of one another. Firstly, the individual solutes are moved apart as a result of the differing distribution coefficients of each component with respect to the stationary phase in the manner previously described. Secondly, having moved the individual components apart, the column is designed to constrain the natural dispersion of each solute band (i.e. the band... [Pg.15]

The term molecule has been purposely avoided in the above discourse for the reason that it cannot be applied appropriately to a most important class of polymers, namely, those composed of indefinitely large network structures. Even In the case of linear polymers, which are composed of finite (although in many cases exceedingly large) molecules, the continuity of structure may deserve greater emphasis than the individuality of the molecules. This is particularly true insofar as properties of the bulk polymers are concerned. [Pg.4]

In continuation of a previous work (1), catalytic hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde has been studied in slurry phase using a high-pressure autoclave. A series of carbon powder (CP)-supported Pt catalysts with widely varying Pt dispersion and Pt location on the support has been used in the study. The purpose has been to find out how the location of the metal on the support and its dispersion affect the two parallel reaction paths, namely the hydrogenation of the C=0 and C=C bonds. [Pg.71]

God, Almighty, advance me in knowledge, understanding and humility To all those who have given and all those who continue to give my life a sense of purpose. [Pg.287]

This seventh volume continues the series established by the late Heinz Gerischer and Charles W. Tobias. The favorable reception of the first six volumes and the steady increase of interest in electrochemical science and technology provide good reasons for the continuation of this series with the same high standards. The purpose of the series is to provide high quality advanced reviews of topics of both fundamental and practical importance for the experienced reader. [Pg.355]

Dr. Neubacher accepted from Hermann Goering the keys to Vienna. He continued to report to Berlin Northwest 7. The success of the New Order in Austria proved his worth, and he was given a branch office. Said its statement-of-purpose ... [Pg.264]

Production planning has to determine run time and throughputs of production processes in order to derive input and output quantities for related input and output products (see also Franke 2005). Production processes can run between a minimum and maximum utilization (Siirie 2005b, p. 213). Production processes apply for continuous single purpose assets as well as... [Pg.118]

The authors also stated that their rats behaved differently from the three animals fed by Osborne and Mendel but that the difference could not be explained. Hopkins had found in earlier experiments that very small amounts of substances extracted with hot alcohol from foods would, when added to deficient diets, render them capable of some growth potential. It was apparent, to Hopkins at least, that hot alcoholic extractions of foods removed small amounts of effective growth promoter from the diet. Ether extraction as carried out by Osborne and Mendel in their fat-free experiments was considered by Hopkins to be inferior to alcoholic extraction. "The purpose of the present note is to indicate that there is still reason for a continuance of the search for special accessory substances of potent influence upon growth. It should be pointed out that Osborne and Mendel themselves admit that such substances may exist." (30)... [Pg.80]

A fiber-optic device has been described that can monitor chlorinated hydrocarbons in water (Gobel et al. 1994). The sensor is based on the diffusion of chlorinated hydrocarbons into a polymeric layer surrounding a silver halide optical fiber through which is passed broad-band mid-infrared radiation. The chlorinated compounds concentrated in the polymer absorb some of the radiation that escapes the liber (evanescent wave) this technique is a variant of attenuated total reflection (ATR) spectroscopy. A LOD for chloroform was stated to be 5 mg/L (5 ppm). This sensor does not have a high degree of selectivity for chloroform over other chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons, but appears to be useful for continuous monitoring purposes. [Pg.233]

Implementation of process analytics in the pharmaceutical indusUy for continuous improvement purposes has received increased attention in recent years. Process analytics or PAT (see previous definition) has been identified as a key factor in continuous improvement initiatives and is seen as a central element of emerging regulatory strategies to enable these efforts as part of QbD. [Pg.30]

For present purposes, the functions of time, f(f), which will be encountered will be piecewise continuous, of less than exponential order and defined for all positive values of time this ensures that the transforms defined by eqn. (A.l) do actually exist. Table 9 presents functional and graphical forms of f(t) together with corresponding Laplace transforms. The simpler of these forms can be readily verified using eqn. (A.l), but as extensive tables of functions and their transforms are available, derivation is seldom necessary, (see, for instance, ref. 75). A simple introduction to the Laplace transform, to some of its properties and to its use in solving linear differential equations, is presented in Chaps. 2—4 of ref. 76, whilst a more complete coverage is available in ref. 77. [Pg.271]

Phase III studies are a continuation of phase II, but many more patients are involved. The purpose of phase III studies is to verify efficacy established earlier in phase II studies and to detect adverse effects that may not have surfaced in earlier studies. Phase IV studies are conducted when the drug has been... [Pg.8]

This brief review attempts to summarize the salient features of chemically modified electrodes, and, of necessity, does not address many of the theoretical and practical concepts in any real detail. It is clear, however, that this field will continue to grow rapidly in the future to provide electrodes for a variety of purposes including electrocatalysis, electrochromic displays, surface corrosion protection, electrosynthesis, photosensitization, and selective chemical concentration and analysis. But before many of these applications are realized, numerous unanswered questions concerning surface orientation, bonding, electron-transfer processes, mass-transport phenomena and non-ideal redox behavior must be addressed. This is a very challenging area of research, and the potential for important contributions, both fundamental and applied, is extremely high. [Pg.254]

In the glassy state relaxation times become very large, making the continuation of the polymerization reaction difficult. Moreover, once in the glassy state, small advances in the conversion of functional groups produce a further increase in the already large relaxation times. Thus, the reaction becomes autoretarded and rapidly ceases for practical purposes. Only an increase in the cure temperature can restart the polymerization reaction. [Pg.131]
