CONTAM report

The CONTAM report from the European Food Safety Authority recently concluded that across Europe the average dietary intake of Cd in adults is between 1.9 and 3.0 pg/kg b.w. per week, and can even reach 2.5-3.9 pg/kg b. w. per week in highly exposed adults [3] (http //www.efsa.europa.eu/en/efsajoumal/doc/980.pdf). Previous reports have suggested that an increase in T wave amplitude could result from inadvertent intravascular administration of adrenaline-contaming local anesthetics. This is the first case report of local anesthetics alone causing significant T wave changes.

A second Scientific Opinion effort of the CONTAM Panel was the report on lead as an undesirable substance in animal feed (CONTAM, 2004). This is of public health concern since lead accumulation in food animals eventually becomes human dietary Pb exposure.

In a recent report it was shown that nisin-contaming nanofibras significantly reduced the viability of 5. aureus in a murine excisional skin infection model. Wounds treated with nisin-containing nanofibers reduced S. aureus to 4.3 x 10 CFU/wound, whereas the control wound (only nanofibras) had 2.2 X 10 CFU/wound aftCT one week (Heunis et al. 2013).
