Space needs to be provided for the auxiliaries, including the lube oil and seal systems, lube oil cooler, intercoolers, and pulsation dampeners. A control panel or console is usually provided as part of the local console. This panel contains instmments that provide the necessary information for start-up and shutdown, and should also include warning and trouble lights. Access must be provided for motor repair and ultimate replacement needs to be considered. If a steam turbine is used, a surface condenser is probably required with a vacuum system to increase the efficiency. AH these additional systems need to be considered in the layout and spacing. In addition, room for pulsation dampeners required between stages has to be included. Aftercoolers may also be required with knockout dmms. Reference 8 describes the requirements of compressor layouts and provides many useful piping hints.

The principal cardiac-assist device, the intra-aortic balloon pump (lABP), is used primarily to support patients before or after open-heart surgery, or patients who go into cardiogenic shock. As of the mid-1990s, the lABP was being used more often to stabilize heart attack victims, especially in community hospitals which do not provide open-heart surgery. The procedure consists of a balloon catheter inserted into the aorta which expands and contracts to assist blood flow into the circulatory system and to reduce the heart s workload by about 20%. The disposable balloon is powered by an external pump console.

Process development on fluidized-bed pyrolysis was also carried out by the ConsoHdation Coal Co., culminating in operation of a 32 t/d pilot plant (35). The CONSOL pyrolysis process incorporated a novel stirred carbonizer as the pyrolysis reactor, which made operation of the system feasible even using strongly agglomerating eastern U.S. biturninous coals. This allowed the process to bypass the normal pre-oxidation step that is often used with caking coals, and resulted in a nearly 50% increase in tar yield. Use of a sweep gas to rapidly remove volatiles from the pyrolysis reactor gave overall tar yields of nearly 25% for a coal that had Eischer assay tar yields of only 15%.

An inspection for shipping damage should be made of the lube console and reservoir. Shipping blocks should be removed and, where permanent supports are used, they should be installed. The drivers should be uncoupled and connected to their respective power sources. As they are operated, uncoupled direction of rotation should be noted. When all checks out, the pumps should be aligned and connected to their drivers. 

Because many kinds of features have steep sides, tip imaging is a common plague of SFM imj es. One consolation is that the height of the feature will be reproduced accurately as long as the tip touches bottom between features. Thus the roughness statistics remain fairly accurate. The lateral dimensions, on the other hand, can provide the user with only an upper bound. 

NMR instrumentation consists of three chief components a magnet, a spectrometer console, and a probe. While in the past much solid state NMR research was conducted on home-built equipment, the current trend is toward the acquisition of commercial systems. The magnets used for solid state NMR applications generally are superconducting solenoids with a cylindrical bore of 89-mm diameter. The most common field strengths available, 4.7, 7.0, 9.4, and 11.7 Tesla, correspond to proton resonance frequencies near 200, 300, 400, and 500 MHz, respectively. 

In Western Europe the largest user is the vehicle construction industry where ABS has been used for fascia panels, door covers, door handles, radiator grilles, ventilation system components, heater housings, seat belt fastenings, console panels, loudspeaker housings, interior trim and other uses. For some years there was extensive use of electroplated ABS. Whilst this continues to be used for nameplates, reflectors and other parts where a bright reflecting surface is a requirement, it has tended to fall out of favour simply for decoration. 

The cost of the vehicle to move the accelerator, and temporary shielding, if needed, have not been included in Table 14. The vehicle houses the control console, video system, and robotic controls. A trailer would carry the main robotic system, the electronic accelerator, magnetron, and the supplies. The cost for such a vehicle and trailer is estimated at 100,000.

The term control panel refers to the instrumentation console in a central control room through which process information is communicated to the process worker and via which the worker changes the state of the process. This category includes display elements such as chart recorders, bar indicators, dials, and modem VDU-based systems together with control elements such as buttons, switches, track balls and mice. The control panel is the human-machine interface (see Chapter 2) that has traditionally received the most attention from human factors specialists.
