Consistency assumption

Predicting future cash flows for a project is extremely difficult with many uncertainties, including the project life. However, providing that consistent assumptions are made, projections of cash flows can be used to choose between competing projects. [Pg.426]

Overall, there are always considerable uncertainties associated with an economic evaluation. In addition to the errors associated with the estimation of capital and operating costs, the project life or interest rates are not known with any certainty. The important thing is that different projects, and options within projects, are compared on the basis of consistent assumptions. Thus, even though the evaluation will be uncertain in an absolute sense, it will still be meaningful in a relative sense for choosing between options. [Pg.32]

Alternatively, the mean of G (calculated at the relief pressure) and G (calculated at the maximum accumulated pressure) can be used. Since Leung s method assumes that the reactor contents are homogeneous during relief, the consistent assumption for the vapour fraction at inlet to the relief system (needed to calculate G) is that it is the same as the average for the reactor, i.e. at the inlet to the relief system the void fraction is given by ... [Pg.45]

Equation (5.57) is based on the equilibrium free volume of the material calculated with the WLF equation. This may be considered a consistent assumption for T > Tg (most of the experimental data are included in... [Pg.179]

Three flow sheets with consistent assumptions, and using commercially available equipment where possible, were developed. The flow sheets and mass and energy balances were used to generate sized equipment lists. Estimated costs for unit operations are based on industry databases for materials and labour, and on the estimates of technical experts from associated research and development programmes. Installation costs, including labour and field bulk materials, were estimated on a subsystem basis. [Pg.337]

Since the early 1980s, there has been a more than fivefold increase in the number of Americans enrolled in HMOs, which has had a dramatic impact on the delivery of healthcare in the United States. As a result of this trend, HMOs realized the need to demonstrate the quality of care they provided to their members compared with fee-for-service health plans however, at the time the industry lacked established standards. Subsequently, various independent review processes evolved, which often did not have consistent assumptions about the parameters that defined quality. It was not until the late 1980s that a group of HMO industry leaders recognized that an organization called the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) had the potential to act as an independent authority on quality control in managed care. ... [Pg.564]

This all relates to the fact that even though there are an infinite number of rational and irrational numbers, the infinite number of irrationals is in some sense greater than the infinite number of rationals. To denote this difference, mathematicians refer to the infinity of rationals as Nq the infinity of irrationals as C, which stands for continuum. There is a simple relationship between C and Nq- K C =2 o. The continuum hypothesis states that C = N j however, the question of whether or not C truly equals N, is considered undecidable. In other words, great mathematicians such as Kurt Godel proved that the hypothesis was a consistent assumption in one branch of mathematics. However, mathematician Paul Cohen proved that it was also consistent to assume the continuum hypothesis is false ... [Pg.121]

So far, we have run models only imder the consistency assumption, where we assume that the effect sizes from direct and indirect comparisons are exchangeable. While appealing theoretically and computationally, some NMA data could contain inconsistency, possibly arising during the data collection process due to heterogeneous effect modifiers (e.g., dissimilar dose levels or severity of disease across study subjects). Several methods have been developed to detect and address inconsistency see Dias et al. (2011b) for a summary. [Pg.234]

A more detailed application of LOPA requires sufficient rather than absolute independence between protection layers or between a protection layer and an initiating event. The principles within BS EN 61511 -1 and 61511 -2 (eg clauses 9.4, 9.5 and 11.2) present the requirements on the BPCS when used as a protection layer. For example a detailed evaluation would need to be performed of the possible failure modes of each element of the protection layer - typically involving techniques such as Failure Modes and Effects /Analysis, Human Reliability /Assessment and Fault Tree /Analysis. Great care needs to be taken in using this approach to ensure that consistent assumptions about the condition of equipment or people are made throughout the analysis. [Pg.98]

The implicit algorithm of Heinze et al (1984) (see also Britz et al, 1988) starts with these consistent assumptions and arrives at a... [Pg.121]

Step 7 is deterministic, because of the Proofs-as-Programs Method. It fails iff LA r) is not complete wrt (P(r). This should normally be excluded by the conjunction of assertion (1) of Theorem 13-2 and the consistency assumption. Moreover, nothing can be said about the synthesized discriminants in terms of determinism or finiteness, because nothing is known about the properties. [Pg.188]

Product life cycle assessment involves consideration of environmental effects at every stage in the product s life cycle, including the natural resources and energy consumed and the waste created in the manufacture, distribution and disposal of a product and its packaging...Such assessments will only provide useful comparative information about how to reduce environmental problems associated with products if they are conducted using uniform and consistent assumptions ... [Pg.5]

The most natural self-consistent assumption in specifying the number of strongly coupled channels would be through channel maxima Vamax in some region min Sq < q[Pg.2712]
