Caustic Soda. Diaphragm cell caustic is commercially purified by the DH process or the ammonia extraction method offered by PPG and OxyTech (see Fig. 38), essentially involving Hquid—Hquid extraction to reduce the salt and sodium chlorate content (86). Thus 50% caustic comes in contact with ammonia in a countercurrent fashion at 60°C and up to 2500 kPa (25 atm) pressure, the Hquid NH absorbing salt, chlorate, carbonate, water, and some caustic. The overflow from the reactor is stripped of NH, which is then concentrated and returned to the extraction process. The product, about 62% NaOH and devoid of impurities, is stripped free of NH, which is concentrated and recirculated. MetaUic impurities can be reduced to low concentrations by electrolysis employing porous cathodes. The caustic is then freed of Fe, Ni, Pb, and Cu ions, which are deposited on the cathode. [Pg.515]

Soybean concentrate production involves the removal of soluble carbohydrates, peptides, phytates, ash, and substances contributing undesirable flavors from defatted flakes after solvent extraction of the oil. Typical concentrate production processes include moist heat treatment to insolubilize proteins, followed by aqueous extraction of soluble constituents aqueous alcohol extraction and dilute aqueous acid extraction at pH 4.5. [Pg.470]

The solution leaving the flotation cell, containing about 0.4 g/L iodine, is sent to a kerosene solvent extraction process to recover the dissolved product. The concentration of most metals in the earth s cmst is very low, and even for abundant elements such as aluminum and iron, extraction from common rock is not economically feasible. An ore is a metallic deposit from which the metal can be economically extracted. The amount of valuable metal in the ore is the tenor, or ore grade, usually given as the wt % of metal or oxide. Eor precious metals, the tenor is given in grams per metric ton or troy ounces per avoirdupois short ton (2000 pounds). The tenor and the type of metallic compounds are the main characteristics of an ore. The economic feasibihty of ore processing, however, depends also on the nature, location, and size of the deposit the availabihty and cost of a suitable extraction process and the market price of the metal. [Pg.162]

Preparatory Processes. Several pyrometaHurgical operations are used to change the chemical and physical properties of the ore or concentrate in order to make it more suitable for the main extraction process. The chemistry of these preparatory processes, which involve mainly gas—soHd reactions, is relatively simple. [Pg.164]

Pommade. These are botanical extracts prepared by the enfleurage method wherein flower petals are placed on a layer of fat which extracts the essential oil. This method is appHed to low odored flowers, which do not yield appreciable oil on steam or water distillation, or flowers of valuable but dehcate odor (such as jasmin), which are destroyed on such treatment. Pommades, as such, are seldom used by the industry at present (ca 1995), but are further processed to provide more concentrated extracts such as absolutes. The purified acid is recovered from the loaded organic stream by contacting with water in another countercurrent extraction step. In place of water, an aqueous alkafl can be used to recover a purified phosphate salt solution. A small portion of the purified acid is typically used in a backwashing operation to contact the loaded organic phase and to improve the purity of the extract phase prior to recovery of the purified acid. Depending on the miscibility of the solvent with the acid, the purified acid and the raffinate may be stripped of residual solvent which is recycled to the extraction loop. Potassium heptafluorotantalate, K2TaF7, or as it is called by its commercial name K-salt, is a starting material for tantalum metal production. K-salt is produced by adding potassium fluoride, KF, or potassium chloride, KC1, to a tantalum strip solution that results from a liquid-liquid extraction process. In order to prevent hydrolysis and co-precipitation of potassium oxyfluoro-tantalate, a small excess of HF is added to the solution [24].
