Networked computer systems with multiple computers and peripherals. Examples are servers for common printing and data storage or client/server networks where the operating system and application software are loaded on the server and can be executed on the client computer. Another example is a laboratory information management system (LIMS) for collection and management of data from multiple computers. 

FR-4, by far the most commonly used material for printed circuits, is constructed of woven fiberglass cloths impregnated with an epoxy resin or epoxy resin blend. The outstanding electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties of FR-4 have made it an excellent material for a wide range of applications including computers and peripherals, servers and storage networks, telecommunications, aerospace, industrial controls, and automotive applications. FR-4 will be discussed in more detail later. 

In distributed systems, each participating site must be equipped with a desktop or a laptop computer loaded with the distributed data collection system software to collect and enter data locally. In addition, each site is provided with necessary storage devices such as tapes, zip diskettes, and CDs and peripheral devices such as printers. Collected data are transferred periodically to the central location as files saved on storage devices, via phone modems, by FTP, or through wireless communications, where they are managed by a centralized data management system. 

Any device connected to the computer but not essential for its basic operation can be called a peripheral device. Peripherals also may be regarded as those devices connected to the computer via a cable. With the possible exception of the hard drive that contains the operating system, most storage devices can be regarded as peripherals. Other peripherals include printers, scanners, cameras, and other devices for getting data in or moving data out, typically called input/output devices or I/O devices.

Data processing. The microprocessor functions according to the program stored in the programmable read-only memory (PROM), a solid-state data-storage device whose contents is virtually indestructible. The main tasks of the 8-bit microprocessor are (a) control of the input multiplexer (b) start and control of the calibration cycle (c) correction of measured values according to the results of the calibration cycle (d) computation of periodic averages (e) calculation of output data (f) output of data and (g) control of peripherals. 

Hardware. The hardware, or physical components, of a computer can be classified according to their general uses of input, output, processing, and storage. Typical input devices include the mouse, keyboard, scanner, and microphone that facilitate communication of information between the human user and the computer. The operation of each of these peripheral devices requires special software called a driver, which is a type of controller, that is able to translate the input data into a form that can be communicated to the operating system and controls input and output peripheral devices. 

Almost any computer requires one or more output ports that permit the CPU to communicate the result of its processing to the outside word. The output may go to a display, for use by a human operator to a peripheral device that produces hard copy, such as a line printer or to a peripheral storage device, such as a magnetic tape unit or the output may constitute process control signals that direct the operations of another system, such as an automated assembly line. Like input ports, output ports are addressable. The input and output ports together permit the processor to interact with the outside world. Data exchanges take place with external or peripheral devices via an I/O register.
