Input/output devices

The majority of MAECIS is written in FORTRAN with a few assembler routines for database management. The program is currently running on a VAX 11/780 computer system and uses Tek-ronix 4025 graphics terminals as the primary input/output devices. MAECIS is a command oriented program that has a built in prompt mechanism to assist the user with commands. It also has a HELP section that provides the user with detailed online instructions. [Pg.11]

Assume that a quantity of interest ( score ) can be written as a real-valued function P t) = F[p(f)] of the system state Q f) at a given time t. This might be, for example, a measure of performance of some input-output device that is supposed to operate within a predefined cycle/gafe time t. Depending on fhe physical problem and model chosen, exfensions and generalizations are conceivable, such as a comparison of the outcome for different t (on a timescale set by a constraint)... [Pg.175]

MINICOMPUTERS. The next step up is a minicomputer based integrator, which may service up to perhaps two to three dozen chromatographs simultaneously. Examples of this class are the 3352-B system of Hewlett-Packard and the PEP-2 system of Perkin-Elmer. The minicomputer may have multiple input/output devices to service two or more locations independently, and may make the computer available (through a language like BASIC) to do further calculations on chromatographic results or to do general laboratory calculations. [Pg.426]

We can I believe go a step further than this recognition of the quantum nature of consciousness, and see just how this overlays and links with the mind/brain problem. The great difficulties in developing a theory of the way in which consciousness/mind is embodied in the activity of the brain, has I believe arisen out of the erroneous attempt to press a deterministic view onto our brain activity. Skinner and the behaviourist psychologists attempted to picture the activity of the brain as a computer where each cell behaved as an input/output device or a complex fhp/flop. [Pg.8]

A frontier area in molecular electronics is the coupling of functional molecules with the appropriate input-output device architecture. [Pg.804]

Any device connected to the computer but not essential for its basic operation can be called a peripheral device. Peripherals also may be regarded as those devices connected to the computer via a cable. With the possible exception of the hard drive that contains the operating system, most storage devices can be regarded as peripherals. Other peripherals include printers, scanners, cameras, and other devices for getting data in or moving data out, typically called input/output devices or I/O devices. [Pg.477]

Dunn et al. (58) interfaced a DEC PDP 11-10 computer to a DuPont Model 990 thermal analysis system. The BCD-binary converter used a cascade of 15 6 bit BCD-binary ROMs to convert the 4.5-digit BCD output of the Hewlett-Packard Model HP 3430D digital voltmeter to bit binary for input to the DEC DR-11C general input-output device. All software was written in FOCAL, under the RT-11 operating system. [Pg.783]

The cost of a microprocessor with a programmable read-only memory and a random-access memory, input output devices, and a clock is about 300 Each programmable read-only memory can handle about 1,000 words. They sell for about 5 each. [Pg.334]

I/O (Input/Output)—Devices used to put data into and receive data from a control system. [Pg.343]

A CAD system consists of three basic components hardware, which includes computer tmd input-output devices, application software, and the operating system software (Figure 7). The operating system software acts as the interface between the hardware and the appUcation software system. [Pg.494]

Communication includes data transformation, that is, the coordination of data transfer between input/ output devices and simulation control as well as data exchange between users and units involved in a multiuser system. [Pg.2504]

Nodes often provide multiple sockets, each of which can accommodate a multicore chip (two or four sockets are common, and three-socket configurations exist as well). Figure 2.15 shows an example of a node architecture based on the quad-core AMD Opteron chip. Each chip has four cores (or processors, as we use the term here). Each core has its own first (LI) and second (L2) level caches. All four cores share the third level cache (L3). A crossbar switch connects the processors to two memory controllers for accessing off-chip memory. The crossbar has three additional high-speed links that can be used to connect other multicore chips or input/output devices. [Pg.32]

Input-output devices planned for the prototype include a cathode-ray-tube display unit and an operator s console typewriter. Machine subroutines or separate special-purpose hardware to handle the decimal-to-binary conversion upon input and binary-to-decimal at output are discussed with the subroutines getting the nod for the IAS-type machine on the basis that it is intended for problems with a large ratio of compute to input-output time. The second of these historic reports introduces the programming concepts of flow diagrams, storage tables, coding, subroutines, and loaders, and illustrates their application with examples such as decimal-binary and binary-decimal conversion, double-precision arithmetic, and sorting problems. [Pg.275]

Term used to describe any input/output device, which is used to communicate with a computer from a remote site (monitor, keyboard, printer). More recent injection molding machines are equipped with a display screen and keyboard. The injection molding machine is operated and monitored via these devices... [Pg.147]

System software is intended to control the hardware resources of a computer system to provide useful functionality for the user. For example, an operating system tries to optimize the use of resources such as processor, memory, and input-output devices to enable users to run various programs efficiently. A database system tries to maximize the use of memory and disk resources to allow different users to access data concurrently. [Pg.296]

The three highest levels of control utilize dedicated computers and Input/output devices (resolvers, potentiometers, servo amplifiers etc). The first of these, termed level 2, Is manual operation but computer controlled, where each drive can be Individually selected and Its velocity controlled to specific set points by the use of a joystick, keyboard and VDU. [Pg.285]

Thermodynamics has logged numerous equations of state over the years of the empirical variety. The common thread is their economy and intuition, where only a few parameters are called upon to address a constellation of forces. As the equations entail multivariable functions, they accommodate the tools of first-year calculus and, in turn, the infrastructure presented in Section 3.1. In their most basic applications, they enable conversions of independent variables into dependent ones. This is the subject of Figure 3.6. The ideal gas and van der Waals equations are represented as input-output devices. The devices accept n, T, V, measured for a gas such as argon and generate p in return. At 200 K, 0.00150 meter 2.00 moles, the van der Waals equation, with the help of Table 3.3 data, offers p = 2.07 x 10 pascals, while the ideal gas law delivers p - 2.22 x 10 pascals. The values differ because the nonideality is addressed, at least in part, by one device and not the other. The result is that the van der Waals equation better approximates the location of what will be termed the state point of the system the placement of a point in a coordinate plane such as pT. The state point placement is represented schematically in the lower half of Figure 3.6. [Pg.67]

Remote control mode requires a dedicated local PC to be assigned to each remote PC since apphcations are stored and executed on the local PC. Shared data and other LAN-attached resources are accessed from the LAN server through the local PC. The remote PC is really nothing more than a simple input/output device. All processing is performed on the local PC. Only keystrokes and screen images are transmitted between the remote PC and the local PC. This setup is really just a remote keyboard and monitor for a local PC. The remote PC controls the local PC and all of its LAN attached resources, hence the name, remote control mode. [Pg.2122]

B. The new applications and new input/output devices constantly change the nature of the demand on the system in regard to instruction set requirements and data needs. [Pg.28]

Input/output device Any piece of equipment connected to a processor and used for introducing information (keyboard, disk) or extracting information (printer, robot). Often referred to as an I/O device. [Pg.67]
