Computer companies

Most large computer companies have canned programs for PERT, CPM, and manpower leveling for sale.Such programs are a necessity for a project manager. 

Contract Manufacturer A company that manufactures products that will be sold under the brand names of its client companies. For example, a large number of consumer electronics, such as laptop computers, are manufactured by contract manufacturers for leading brand-name computer companies such as Dell. Many other types of products are made under contract manufacturing, from apparel to pharmaceuticals. Also see Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and Original Design Manufacturer (ODM). ... 

The computer program for drawing these plots is tied to a modified teletype ASR 33 which has had Selsyn motors and electronics attached to turn it into a point plotter. The unit was sold by the Typagraph Corp. and is their model T-3. This works in a time-sharing mode with a commercial time-sharing computer company (Dialcom, Inc., Silver Spring, MD.).

It s amazing There are some customers I ve done work for who have had a computer company come in, set up their backup system for them, and only show them how to change tapes When the customers have a problem, they feel helpless and don t know if their backup is any good until the computer company comes in and does their restore for them. 

The epilogue to Union Carbide s story can be expressed in a single sentence. In 2001 Dow Chemical acquired Union Carbide for 9.3 billion. The situation was similar to that of Fujitsu s acquisition of Siemens Nixdorf, Europe s leading computer company in 1999, as described in my earlier book Inventing the Electronic Century. Where else could the remaining weaker multisectored core company have gone ... 

Japanese company, and Philips in Europe. Hewlett-Packard s highly successful Spectrum quickly created its worldwide marketing network, and the company licensed its product to Hitachi. IBM s initial attempt to produce workstations failed. Then in 1991 it marketed a successful RS600. On the other hand, DEC, still committed to the minicomputer and its VAX technology, fell behind. Indeed in 1990 Olsen attempted to produce a mainframe. In the meantime, the two other major Japanese computer companies, NBC and Toshiba, had acquired the workstation technology from Stanford s MIPS Computer Systems. 

One underlying reason for the Japanese success was its impressive commercializing of a new memory chip, the DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory), initially introduced by Intel in 1971. As its New Series Project was being fulfilled, MITI formed a new project, the Very Large-Scale Integrated (VLSI) circuit, which would coordinate the activities of the four major computer companies in commercializing the DRAM memory chip.

Have the class do research on how silicon chips help run computers, VCRs, and other electronic equipment. Or ask students to write letters to a computer company and ask questions about this topic. If possible, invite a computer technologist to talk to the class.

If we were to list the materials of technology, sihcon would certainly be prominent on that list. As we mentioned in the previous section, silicon is the basic material in the semiconductor devices that make up CD players, computers, and other electronics gear. (Silicon Valley, an area in Cahfomia that is headquarters for many computer companies, takes its name from the element silicon.) But oxygen compounds of silicon also are important to technology. Quartz crystals, a form of silica (also called silicon dioxide, Si02), for example, are used to control frequencies in radio transmitters and watches. And many practical materials such as cement and bricks are silicate materials. Silicates are compounds of sihcon and oxygen with one or more metallic elements. In this section, we will look at silicon, sUica, and silicates.

Several computer companies have minimized the number of types of plastics used in computers. Panasonic once used 20 different polystyrene resin grades but has cut that to 4. Hewlett-Packard (HP) tries to use a single polymer in products, if possible, preferably HIPS or ABS. HP also codes any piece of plastic that weighs more than 25 g with a resin identification number. ...
