Compound Benzoin Tincture

In the Asia-Pacific region, AItingia excelsa Noronha (Liquidambar altingiana Bl.), Alan-gia gracilipes Hemsl. (Amyris ambrosiaca L.f.), Liquidambar orientalis Mill, and Liquidambar formosana Hance are of medicinal value. The purified basalm obtained from the trunk of Liquidambar orientalis Mill, or prepared storax (British Pharmaceutical Codex, 1969) has been used similarly as Peru basalm in the form of an ointment to treat scabies and other skin diseases, and as an ingredient of Compound Benzoin Tincture. 

Genital warts (condylomata acuminata) Topical Apply 10% 25% solution in compound benzoin tincture to dry surface. Use 1 drop at a time allowing drying between drops until area is covered. Total volume should be limited to less than 0.5 ml per treatment session. 

THERAP CAT (VET) As a component of Compound Benzoin Tincture. Has been used as a parasiticide. 

Currently the only officially recognized use of aloe is as an ingredient in compound benzoin tincture, presumably for its beneficial properties on the skin. 

Mainly used in friar s balsam also as an antiseptic, astringent, and expectorant in vaporizer fluids for inhalation to relieve respiratory discomforts in Compound Benzoin Tincture, which is widely used as a skin protectant or topical adhesive agent and as an antiseptic and styptic on small cuts. Tincture also used in dentistry to treat inflammation of gums and oral herpetic lesions. 

Podophyllin is used in treating venereal warts (condyloma acuminatum) and other papillomas, most commonly as a dispersion in Compound Benzoin Tincture or as a solution in alcohol. It is also rather extensively used in laxative preparations, usually along with other cathartic agents. 

Storax is mainly used as an ingredient of Compound Benzoin Tincture (see aloe, balsam tolu, and benzoin). 

Benzoin tincture contains 10% benzoin in alcohol, while the compound formulation also contains 2% aloes, 8% storax, and 4% tolu balsam in alcohol. Occasionally, allergic contact dermatitis occurs to these preparations or derivatives in Ar-ning s tincture (besides benzoin, tumenol ammonium, anthrarobin, and ether), adhesives, water repellent barrier creasms, lozenges, and cosmetics (Spott and Shelley 1970). Cross-reactions occur to balsam of Peru, storax, eugenol, vanilla, a-pinene, benzyl alcohol, and benzyl cinnamate (Hjorth 1961).

Podophyllum resin, an alcoholic extract of Podophyllum peltatum, commonly known as mandrake root or May apple, is used in the treatment of condyloma acuminatum and other verrucae. It is a mixture of podophyllotoxin, and peltatin, desoxypodophyllotoxin, dehydropodophyllotoxin, and other compounds. It is soluble in alcohol, ether, chloroform, and compound tincture of benzoin. 

Compound Extracts or Bouquets.—Extrait de bouquet.—Extraits de jasmin et violette, each two pints extraits d acaeia, rose, ceillet, et des flenrs d oranger, each one pint flowers of benzoin, two drachms tincture of amber, four ounces. Mix and filter. 

Podophyllotoxin and its derivatives are active cytotoxic agents with specific affinity for the microtubule protein of the mitotic spindle. Normal assembly of the spindle is prevented, and epidermal mitoses are arrested in metaphase. A 25% concentration of podophyllum resin in compound tincture of benzoin is recommended for the treatment of condyloma acuminatum. Application should be restricted to wart tissue only, to limit the total amount of medication used and to prevent severe erosive changes in adjacent tissue. In treating cases of large condylomas, it is advisable to limit application to sections of the affected area to minimize systemic absorption. The patient is instructed to wash off the preparation 2-3 hours after the initial application, since the irritant reaction is variable. Depending on the individual patient s reaction, this period can be extended to 6-8 hours on subsequent applications. If three to five applications have not resulted in significant resolution, other methods of treatment should be considered.

Compound Tincture of Squills and Benzoin. This is also known as ft edeV t JSlixir. Take of squills, orris root, and elecampane, each 25 uracluns liquorice root, 2 drachms aniseed and myrrh, of each 4 scruples saffron, 18 grains dilute alcohol, 22 fluid ounces. Macerate for 15 days, express and filter. Dose, 40 to drops, in catarrh asthma, d c. 

Compound Tincture of Benzoin. Macerate 3 troy ounces benzoin, i troy ounce st)Cotrine aloes, both in coarse powder, and 2 troy ounces storax, for 14 days in 2 pints alcohol filter through paper. ( (7. S. Ph.)... 

Essence of Coltsfoot. Balsam of tolu, 1 ounce compound tincture of benzoin and rectified spirit of wine, of each 2 ounces dissolve. 

Pectoral Balsam. Tincture of tola aud compound tincture of benzoin, of each 2 ounces rectified spirit, 4 ounces mix. An a pectoral iu coughs and colds. Uu. tc. I tea-spoonful. 

Turlington s Balsam is much like the compound tincture of benzoin of the Pharmacopceia of the U. S., though it is somewhat more complicated. To make it, take benzoin, 12 ounces liquid storax, 4 ounces balsam of Peru, 2 ounces myrrh and aloes, each 1 ounce balsam of tolu and extract of liquorice, each 4 ounces angelica root, t ounce alcohol, 8 pints. Digest for 10 days, and strain. 

CiginforHoaneness, Astdiu Ac. Soak Uiick unsized paper in a solution of saltpetre, and dry. Then brash over with tincture of cascarilla and, when nearly dry, with compound tincture of benzoin. In about half an hour, cut it into pieces 1 by 4 inches, and roll into cigarettes. Excellent for hoarseness, loss of voice, and asthma. 

Among other products, benzoin is used in tincture of benzoin, which contains benzoin resin and alcohol, and compound tincture of benzoin, which contains benzoin resin.

Spans and Tweens have been used to overcome similar problems in the formulation of medicines for internal use. The solubilization of resinous components of tinctures such as benzoin and myrrh in aqueous vehicles and the incorporation of water-soluble ingredients into oily vehicles has been discussed by Stoklosa and Ohmart [230]. Gerding and Sperandio [229] give examples of mixtures of tinctures and fluid extracts which, on addition of polysorbate 20, will not precipitate on dilution. Cetomacrogol 1000 added in small amounts to opiate linctus of squill, syrup of ginger, compound mixtures of camphor, and of lobelia and stramonium has a similar clearing action [207].
