Compassion

Most Gurdjieff work does not encourage active development of love and compassion until after years of practice of more basic work. If love and compassion were cultivated at the beginning, before you had much understanding of your own mind and feelings, it would probably result in the growth of more illusions that would further support false personality. 

Note that these ideas and practices are embedded in a general cultivation of mindfulness. I suspect the concepts and methods described below would not have the same effect if used outside a personal commitment to constantly expand your mindfulness of yourself and the world. They might not be as effective, and sometimes they might amount to putting fertilizer on the weeds, so treat them with caution. 

What is compassion Standard dictionaries trace its origin to the Latin roots com, with, and pati, to bear or suffer, and define the word as meaning a sympathetic consciousness of the suffering of others and a desire to help them. It is a sad commentary on our times that a major encyclopedic dictionary of psychology I turned to for more clarification doesn t even list compassion, a lack reflected in most introductory psychology textbooks. 

We can t really define compassion in any exact sense, of course. It is primarily a quality of emotional intelligence, and words relate primarily to intellectual intelligence. We can say a few things about it that can resonate with appropriate feelings, though. 

A second requirement for the development of compassion is empathy. Empathy is a recognition of a feeling/thinking state in another,/ /mj an ability to at least partially experience that same state in yourself. Thus empathy ties in with self-knowledge. To recognize that someone is depressed, for example, could be done in a cold, intellectual way. You could learn that certain facial expressions, body postures, and styles of speaking usually mean that a person is depressed. To also emotionally know what it is like to feel depressed from your own experience leads to the experience of empathy. This does not necessarily mean that you must feel as depressed as the depressed person you are empathizing with.

If you do not listen to people, you cannot expect them to listen to you. Communication is a two-way activity. Do not make assumptions about what people know, think, or want done about risks. Take the time to find out what people are thinking. Often, people are more concerned about issues such as trust, credibility, competence, control, voluntariness, fairness, and compassion than about mortality statistics and the details of QRA. Use techniques such as interviews, focus groups, and surveys to gauge what people are thinking. 

Numerous analyses of data routinely collected in the United States have been performed by the U.S. National Climatic Center, results of these analyses are available at reasonable cost. The joint frequency of Pasquill stability class, wind direction class (primarily to 16 compass points), and wind speed class (in six classes) has been determined for various periods of record for over 200 observation stations in the United States from either hourly or 3-hourly data. A computer program called STAR (STability ARray) estimates the Pasquill class from the elevation of the sun (approximated from the hour and time of year), wind speed, cloud cover, and ceiling height. STAR output for seasons and the entire period of record can be obtained from the Center. Table 21-2 is similar in format to the standard output. This table gives the frequencies for D stability, based on a total of 100 for all stabilities. 

The frequency of occurrence of winds from each of the 36 direchons for the two sites is given in the second and third columns of Table 21-6. Knoxville has its maximum from 240°, with frequent winds also from adjacent points. There is a secondary maximum across the compass (in the vicinity of 60°). Nashville, on the other hand, seems to have only one principal maximum (from 180°). To explore the magnitude of the differences, the fourth column is the difference for each direchon. Summing the absolute values of the differences and expressing them as a percentage of the total number of hours of observations shows that the differences constitute 62% of the total.

Following the operating principle of the most commonly used universal joint, the input shaft and the output shaft both terminate in yokes that are oriented in mutually perpendicular planes. The branches of each yoke are pinned to a cross connector so that each yoke can pivot about its beam of the cross. This mechanism was employed in the sixteenth century by Italian mathematician Geronimo Cardano, who used it to maintain a shipboard compass in a horizontal plane, regardless of the movement of the ship. Consequently it is often called a Cardan joint.
