The research suggests that leaders best accomplish facilitating the shared vision when they value the human resources of their organizations. At least two contemporary theories work with this principle of valuing human resources the transformational leadership theory and the theory of emotional intelligence. [Pg.60]

Emotional intelligence and leadership Daniel Goleman (1998) introduced the concept of emotional intelligence (El). This concept, while still controversial, merits some elucidation as it relates to leadership. Goleman and others describe El as the emotional needs, drives and true values of a person. El research is akin to the trait theory of leadership, in which the core elements of successful leaders are identified. Researchers have then taken these traits and identified leadership styles in which these traits are dominant, thus allowing a person to begin using particular traits in particular situations. [Pg.61]

We can t really define compassion in any exact sense, of course. It is primarily a quality of emotional intelligence, and words relate primarily to intellectual intelligence. We can say a few things about it that can resonate with appropriate feelings, though. [Pg.266]

I created the inclusion equation to help depict the interrelated variables necessary to create and sustain inclusive cultures (see Figure 7.1). There are two broad components of the inclusion model it depicts macro and micro inclusion practices. The two macro aspects focus on organizational culture and organizational systems. At the micro level, the model identifies individual cultural competence and emotional intelligence as the two core requirements to create and sustain inclusion. The components of the model are interdependent and work synergistically. When any one aspect is weak or absent, it severely inhibits the ability of an organization to effectively practice inclusion. [Pg.209]
