Company unpredictability

Although pharmaceutical companies attempt to design and develop new chemical entities using rational and logical processes, very few of these compounds become clinically useful drags because unpredictable... [Pg.376]

For Caenorhabditis, Drosophila, and Tribolium castanium, stock centers exist from which particular strains or species may be ordered (Table III). Live representatives of most animal phyla and pure cultures of some protists can be obtained relatively cheaply from supply companies (Table III). Ordering specimens is convenient in that they arrive identified, although voucher specimens should still be preserved (see above). Organisms should be ordered as far in advance as possible, since their appearance in the field may be seasonal or unpredictable. [Pg.60]

However, there have been cases where companies have hired unpredictable workers without a criminal record. In early 2004, in Texas, for example, a contract security guard at a BASF ammonia facility apparently shot himself, then blamed it on a foreign intruder, only to be arrested on other unrelated charges two weeks later. His story had been covered widely by the media, raising public concerns about plant safety. [Pg.73]

The initial entry of the oil and gas companies came in the 1920s when four competitors—Socal, Shell, Jersey Standard, and Phillips—began to produce chemicals. The first two commercialized agricultural chemicals. The other two, Jersey Standard and Phillips, concentrated on commercializing petroleum-based gasoline. However, it was the totally unpredictable and extraordinary demand of World War II that created the petroleum side of the polymer/petrochemical revolution. The four companies that had created their learning bases in the 1930s became the first movers in this new industry. [Pg.172]

Indecisiveness on the part of the Mexican government, an unpredictable political climate, as well as a downturn in petrochemicals have caused a lack of interest in purchasing part of the state-owned petrochemicals. Legislation in 1997 allowed private companies to build and operate private enterprises, but such ventures depended on basic petrochemicals produced by PEMEX. [Pg.393]

Industry s continued interest In shale oil, despite Its current unattractiveness, is sustained primarily by the belief that the real cost of Imported oil will continue to rise and ultimately surpass shale oil at some unpredictable future date. Government assistance is sought by Industry before that date on the grounds that a) there is a public value, which cannot be directly captured by a company undertaking a shale oil venture now, in reducing imported oil and b) there is need for an immediate start In order to have significant shale oil production in place when the cost curves do intersect. [Pg.199]

Vinorelbine demonstrated important antitumour properties associated with reduced toxic side effects and its application was developed during the 1980 s by the French pharmaceutical company Pierre Fabre Medicaments, under the commercial name Navelbine . Vinorelbine is now widely used in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer and breast cancer, and several other potential indications are under clinical investigation, like lymphoma, esophageal cancer and prostatic carcinoma [16, 22, 23], Furthermore, it has been proved that vinorelbine is well absorbed orally with no unpredictable toxic effects and an oral formulation of the drug was registered in France in 2001 [13, 16]. The main side effect of vinorelbine is hematological toxicity. [Pg.818]

But no matter the field in which you are interested, it helps to know that a number of variables—or unpredictable factors—come into play when looking for a job. The business world has its own rules and idiosyncrasies. For example, you might think you have a good shot at a position in a particular company, but someone else, who seems just as qualified as you, may have an even better chance. Why The other candidate may have a personal reference from someone who... [Pg.10]

Everyone wants to be creative, but no one wants to deal with the mess it takes to live with creativity. If you are a writer, the mess can take the form of a block and everything you have to do to work your way around, through, over, and under it. If you re a software company, the mess can take the form of learning how to deal in a non-linear way with the energy of creativity it takes to design new applications. And if you re a printing company, the mess can take the form of wasted paper and ink used to discover new ways to print that are different from your competitors. There s no doubt that creativity is untidy it s uncontrollable and it s unpredictable. [Pg.127]
