Loans from specialist companies. There is a number of companies and institutions who specialize in providing long-term finance to industry. The forms of loans offered vary from one deal to another and, in some cases, will be accompanied by a request for some degree of participation in the equity of the borrower. [Pg.1038]

ICSID members are professional organizations, promotional societies, educational institutions, government bodies, companies and institutions which aim to contribute to the development of the profession of industrial design. Today ICSID consists of 149 Member Societies, representing 52 countries from all continents (except Antarctica ). These Societies collaborate to establish an international platform through which design institutions worldwide can stay in touch, share common interests and new experiences, and be heard as a powerful voice. [Pg.621]

Fraud is not limited to the investigator and his or her staff. Staff of pharmaceutical companies and institutions may alter CRTs, modify data sets, alter tables, suppress reported side effects or bias written reports. The detection of such activities, inside or outside an institution, by investigators or company staff relies on others in the same team recognising that something is suspicious. Double checking of data by colleagues and authentication of those data is the best deterrent to misconduct. [Pg.272]

Venkat Venkatasubramanian Certainly we are nowhere near such a level of complexity. That would involve database management and security issues, which we are not looking at right now. Eventually, when these kinds of systems are sitting in companies and institutions, both issues will be somewhat important. We have a long way to go to reach that point. [Pg.89]

The research described in this report was funded by a consortium of companies and institutions interested in hydrogen technology and uses. [Pg.4]

A calculation does not require any facilities like those needed for experiments, and people can easily become familiar with the calculations that enable predictions. In principle, this means that calculation can be applied more widely. However, some calculations are impossible, and occasionally the results of the calculations are not reliable. In such cases, conclusions cannot be reached on the basis of calculations alone screening tests become necessary. Most companies and institutes which develop reactive chemicals now have appropriate facilities to run screening tests. [Pg.19]

The information provided in this chapter is limited not only by matters of space and relevance, but also by an additional reason. A number of biotechnological companies and institutions are working in the development of new cultivars with altered starch compositions. Research done by, or on behalf of, commercial enterprises generally is not published in refered journals and is kept secret by the companies until applying for a patent. This policy of secrecy clearly slows down the dissemination of scientific information and deprives scientists of the very helpful peer review (affecting negatively the quality of the research). This tendency, unfortunately, is likely to become more dominant. Limited information is sometimes offered in scientific conferences, but hard data are often missing. [Pg.131]

At that time, a full review of companies and institutions conducting non-clinical safety studies (toxicology) was undertaken by the FDA and although, in general, the industry was found to be credible, one company (Industrial Biotest) was found to be generating extremely poor-quality data, in many instances, in a fraudulent manner. This, therefore, caused the FDA to put together and implement the GLPs.[" ""l... [Pg.1931]

I do also hope that you will share my pleasure and pride that we have succeeded in forming the majority of the manuscripts into a coherent whole and that the struggles of each and every comrade-in-pens were in the end rewarded by the final outcome. I would like to again express my deep gratitude to all of you and also all those who participated in the prior edition. Without the support of all the companies and institutes, which made the participation of employees and access to their knowledge possible, this edition would not have been possible, a kindness for which I would like to express my appreciation. [Pg.837]

The present book is a result of the efforts of 37 co-workers and the editors would like to express their gratitude to all those who contributed to this book and the respective companies and institutes which made this possible. In retrospect we have to admit that the co-operation of such a diverse crew of authors was not always easy to co-ordinate. In this context, we would like to express our deep gratitude to all those patient contributors who, despite the delays caused by those who were either late in submitting or who completely refrained from doing so, did not hesitate to keep their articles up-to-date. It is especially gratifying for us to see that our joint efforts have been rewarded by the present collection of articles which tries to capture the current state of knowledge. [Pg.839]

If this EU Directive on the protection of personal data were to be taken literally, most clinical trials would cease, particularly where clinical data were transferred outside the EU. Of the non-EU countries, only Switzerland and Hungary apparently meet the requirements of the Directive at the present time Other countries such as the US, Ganada, Australia and New Zealand apparently fail to meet the requirements of the Directive when handling personal data and therefore, in theory, European data cannot be processed in these countries. Fortunately, the so-called Safe Harbor scheme allows clinical data to be sent to defined organisations in the US that comply with the Directive s principles. It is anticipated that similar agreements will be set up to overcome these legislative hurdles so that global studies driven by European pharmaceutical companies and institutions can be undertaken without problems. [Pg.261]

Never before the Internet arrived was such valuable corporate employment information made so abundantly and easily available to job seekers. (Even chemists who do not own computers or subscribe to Internet services can use the hardware, software, and services furnished by free public libraries.) Now, a growing number of pharmaceutical firms maintain richly detailed Web sites. The Internet addresses of nearly 400 companies and institutions that placed chemist-wanted advertisements during 1997-1999 appear in Appendix B. A great many of these sites devote one or more pages to employment opportunities where job seekers can expect to find information on a variety of related topics. The subjects include application guidelines, job banks and lines, employee benefits, and the pharmaceutical businesses in which the company engages. PerSeptive Biosystems and Protein Design Labs state on their Web sites the salaries they offer to chemists. Whether employees receive stock options or may purchase discounted company stock is disclosed on some corporate Web sites. [Pg.238]
