Conventional Solid Wastes In most office, commercial, and industrial buildings, solid wastes that accumulate in individual offices or work locations usually are collected in relatively large containers mounted on casters. Once filled, these containers are removed by means of the service elevator, if there is one, and emptied into (1) large storage containers, (2) compactors used in conjunc tion with the storage containers, (3) stationaiy compactors that can compress the... 

Stationary-Container Systems fSCS) Collec tion systems in which the containers used for the storage of wastes remain at the point of waste generation, except for occasional short trips to the collec tion vehicle, are defined as stationary-container systems. Labor requirements for mechanicallv loaded stationaiy-coutaiuer systems are essentially the same as for hauled-container systems. There are two main types of stationaiy-coutaiuer systems (1) those in which self-loading compactors are used and (2) those in which manually loaded vehicles are used. 

Systems with self-loading compactors. Container size and utilization are not as critical in stationaiy-coutaiuer systems using self-loading collec tion vehicles equipped with a compaction mechanism (see Fig. 25-61 and Table 25-59) as they are in hauled-container systems. Trips to the disposal site, transfer station, or processing station are made after the contents of a number of containers have been col-lec ted and compacted and the collec tion vehicle is fuU. Because a variety of container sizes and types are available, these systems may be used for the coUection of all types of wastes. Container sizes vaiy from relatively small sizes (0.6 m ) to sizes comparable to those handled with a hoist truck (see Table 25-58).

Compactors. Large-capacity containers and container-trailers are used in conjunction with stationaiy compactors at transfer stations. In some cases, the compac tion mechanism is an integral part of the container. When containers are equipped with a self-contained compaction mechanism, the moveable bulkhead used to compress the wastes is also used to discharge the compacted wastes. 

Hydraulic piston-type compactors for collection vehicles, on-site compactors, and transfer-station compactors roll crushers used to fracture brittle materials and to crush tin and aluminum cans and other ductile materials... 

Equipment requirements. The types of equipment that have been used at sanitary landfills include both crawler and rubber-tired trac tors, scrapers, compactors, draghnes, and graders. The size and amount of equipment required will depend primarily on local site... 

The physical properties of concern for construction fill applications are the relationship between moisture and density, plasticity, the liquid limit, and particle size distribution. The same set of construction machinery for conventional fills, such as bulldozers, compactors, and grabbers, is suitable for fill earth works containing spent foundry sand.

The spray-dried flavours or powder blends are processed by a roller compactor into lumps (Fig. 21.12). These lumps are crushed into granules. This process cannot be categorised as a direct encapsulating technique, since the flavour-encapsulating effect of compacted flavours is based on the use of spray-dried raw material. 

In the aforementioned chapter in the First Edition Reference 1,1 mentioned, There is no such thing as a standard approach to solve compactor scale-up or compactor equipment changes in the pharmaceutical production process (1). At that time of the publication, it appeared that was very much the case history of roller compaction scale-up in the pharmaceutical industry. This understanding was based on the fact that there were no pharmaceutical industrial journal articles published at the time on the subject. On the other hand, it was also true that considerations, approaches, and examples presented in that chapter were experienced by others and were not all-inclusive. 

Gereg and Capolla developed process parameters determined by a model laboratory bench scale Carver press, model C (Carver Inc. Savannah, Georgia, U.S.A.), which were translated to production scale compactor parameters (6). Their study provided a method to predict whether a material is suitable for roller compaction. Their study objectives were to characterize properties of the material to identify process parameters suitable to achieve the necessary particle size and density using the dry granulation process and then translate laboratory information to a production scale roller compactor. Actually, information developed from a Carver press was correlated and scaled-up to a production scale Fitzpatrick roller compactor. Model IR 520 (Fitzpatrick Co., Elmhurst, Illinois, U.S.A.) The compactor produced very similar powder granule characteristics as the Carver press. Various lactose materials, available as lactose monohydrate or spray dried lactose monohydrate, were used as the model compounds. Results indicated that a parametric correlation could be made between the laboratory bench Carver press and the production scale compactor, and that many process parameters can be transferred directly. 

The roller compactor s full axial rolls produced compacts in the form of sticks. The unmilled compacts from both machines had the same density, 1.3g/cm. The milled roller compacts produced comparative granules except for bulk density and correspondingly the Carr index values ... 

The milled compacts generated slightly larger particles where the round slugs produced from the Carver press produced a greater number of fines. The compactor flow rate for the milled roller compacted material was twice as fast as that of the Carver press granules, but both flow rates were deemed acceptable. The authors concluded that both methods produced, for all practical purposes, equivalent granulated material.
