Community concern

Completely trivial names continue in use for good reasons, of which an important one is the need for a simple name for frequent communication concerning a commonly encountered compound or structure. For obscure compounds there is surely neither need nor desirability to perpetuate trivial names, and coining new trivial names is almost never justified. Let us, however, consider purine , the trivial name for what might more systematically be named imidazo[5,4-ring system is so important in biochemistry that exclusive use of one of the systematic names would be intolerable. If the name purine were not available, another short trivial name would inevitably be coined, or even an acronym ( IP or TAP ). It is better to retain the name sanctioned by roughly a century of use, and benefit from a link in comprehension with the past. [Pg.8]

If you decide on a formal presentation, consider having the full PSM team participate. Similarly, written communications concerning the plan (if, for example, it is broadly distributed for comment) should originate with the team. This will not only acknowledge their contribution but will also tangibly demonstrate the interdisciplinary nature of the challenge you have undertaken. [Pg.123]

An interesting communication concerns an attempt to quantify bond orders in thiophosphoric acids using 34g and 36s-... [Pg.143]

There are a few communications concerning cycloadditions of nitrile oxides to unsaturated oxa and aza cage systems. Benzo- and mesitonitrile oxides RCNO give, with five substituted 7-oxanorbomenes 106, mixtures of the corresponding exo-adducts 107 and 108 in nearly quantitative yields. No traces of compounds resulting from the endo-face attack was detected (274). Substituents at positions 5 and 6 of 106 render the process highly regioselective. [Pg.40]

The human element is not one third of sustainability it is central to its implementation (Pearson 2003). The challenge of sustainability is neither wholly technical nor rational. It is one of the change in attitude and behavior. Sustainability therefore must include the social discourse where the fundamental issues are explored collaboratively within the groups or community concerned. We do not do that very well, partly because of increasing populations, complexity, distractions, and mobility, but more because of certain characteristics of the dominant paradigm that are seen as desirable (Flicker 2001). [Pg.22]

In brief communications concerning the use of dialkyl ketoximes (79IZV2840 81MI7, 81MI8) in this reaction, no comprehensive synthetic procedures are described. The experimental details for the synthesis of 2,3-dialkyl-substituted pyrroles from symmetrical and unsymmetrical dialkyl ketoximes and dichloroethane in the KOH/DMSO system (Scheme 63) were first discussed by Trofimov et al. (85KGS59). [Pg.275]

In addition, the 2002 Brownfields Law addressed investor and community concerns about future liability for contamination at brownfields sites, even after they have undertaken cleanup and redevelopment. The act relieved prospective purchasers and other innocent landowners from future liability for contamination if they take reasonable steps to identify and prevent release of any hazardous substances at the time they purchase or acquire a brownfield property. [Pg.340]

A better approach to resolve community concern is to move forward and follow the systematic procedure to first identify the hazard, evaluate its scope, assess the risks posed, and then develop an appropriate response. [Pg.52]

The foimdation of exemplary patient education and reassurance is communication concerning the expected postoperative course between the ophthalmic surgeon and the optometric physician. In addition, during each postoperative visit patients should be advised of their progress and reassured or coimseled about the examination findings. Level of physical activity, use or discontinuance of medications, and any cautions regarding symptoms should be reviewed. [Pg.601]

ABSTRACT Ttiis communication concerns the basic principles and formulation of a model for a circulating fluidised bed (CFB) biomass gasifier. The main problems are the lot of unknowns concerning the set of kinetic equations needed and the lack of data from commercial CFB biomass gasifiers to check the model. The reacting network to be used in the model is deeply analysed. It is concluded that a self learning or self Urning adaptive model is the best solution... [Pg.333]

The isolation of hydrastine from Hydrastis canadensis L. and its separation from other alkaloids were reexamined (229-232). Following several communications concerning the isolation of hydrastine from Berberis laurina Thunb. (233-235) it appears that this alkaloid is, after all, not present (236, 237). Hydrastine picrate has been described (238) and the degradation of its V-oxide has been studied (22). [Pg.121]

Editor s note The following Investment Analysis of Dow by Innovest Strategic Value Advisors is intended only as an illustration of potential investment community concerns arising from decisions that fall within the CSR/sustainability realm. While Dow Chemical is the subject of the analysis, it is not the intention of the editors to recognize all of the positive developments that have been undertaken by Dow and that are referenced elsewhere in this book.]... [Pg.455]

The Smart Growth Network (SGN) was formed in response to increasing American community concerns about the need for new ways to grow local communities while boosting the economy, protecting the environment, and enhancing community vitality. [Pg.500]

Neuroscience communities concerned with different systems have developed identical abbreviations for completely different structures for example SO stands for both supraoptic nucleus and superior olive, SC for suprachiasmatic nucleus and superior colliculus, and IC for inferior colliculus and internal capsule. In dealing with the entire nervous system (as increasingly more researchers do) these parochial abbreviation schemes become impossible to implement. An additional complication arises when homologous structures are nonetheless named or abbreviated differently in different species. We have made an effort to establish homologies and are using the same abbreviations for homologous... [Pg.129]

Reichold Chemicals, Inc. This University of Alabama case study deals with wastewater treatment problems at the company s Tuscaloosa plant. In addition to the emphasis on the methods for treating wastewater, economic, social, and community issues are raised. Although dated, this study provides a basis for considering alternate methods for the manufacture of phenol, the associated pollution problems, and community concerns. [Pg.9]

In the context of a changing society, chemical engineers need to be more attuned. They need to take advantage of the networks to pick up on community concerns and then be proactive in responding. The profession has embraced the environment , but that was in the last decade (an old framework). With the new century, sustainability is the catch cry. [Pg.80]

Communicate concerns that could influence timelines or quality of a project early on, for example, clear expectations on availability, shipments, and quality of reagents. [Pg.285]
