It is obvious that the manipulated brain of the masses, filled from birth with emotional misbeliefs, illusions, misinterpretations, myths, fantasies, motivates - given the right circumstances - irrational activities. In peaceful periods of the community rational brain activity is dominant and the irrational, emotional chaos is suppressed. There are specially organized occasions for the eruption of the volcano (concerts, sport-events, proper political party meetings, etc.). But in emotionally supersensitive, trying periods of the community (riots, revolutions, wars) the irrational brain becomes dominant. The immense literature that describes the history of mankind is, as a matter of fact, an exact description of the consequences of traditional manipulation of the human brain. [Pg.134]

The second core theme of Habermas work is the notion that modern societies are divisible into two component parts, the system and the lifeworld, distinct spheres which together form the social world. By lifeworld, Habermas refers to the everyday mutual understandings, values, and interactions that form the basis of informal social relations (1987 Ch. Vl/1). Institutions such as the family, community, culture, and media all constitute the sphere of shared experiences, beliefs, cultural knowledge, and values (Weaver 2009 11). As such, the lifeworld is the sphere of social action where forms of communicative rationality... [Pg.81]

In the development of new products, optimization of the fermentation medium for titer only often ignores the consequences of the medium properties on subsequent downstream processing steps such as filtration and chromatography. It is imperative, therefore, that there be effective communication and understanding between workers on the upstream and downstream phases of the produc t development if rational trade-offs are to be made to ensure overall optimahty of the process. One example is to make the conscious decision, in collaboration with those responsible for the downstream operations, whether to produce a protein in an unfolded form or in its native folded form the purification of the aggregated unfolded proteins is simpler than that of the native protein, but the refolding process itself to obtain the product in its final form may lack scalabihty. [Pg.2057]

Markets decide what energy resources shall be produced, how they shall be produced, and who will receive the benefits of the production processes. With millions of different activity options, and millions of individuals making individual and collective decisions, it is an ovenvhelniingly complex process. At the same time, it is usually very efficient because self-interested market players communicate through the price system. A self-interested rational individual will make decisions based on true preferences, and follow those preferences in a way that will provide the greatest satisfaction. Choices will be made under certain... [Pg.592]

Besides temperature and addition of non-solvent, pressure can also be expected to affect the solvency of the dispersion medium for the solvated steric stabilizer. A previous analysis (3) of the effect of an applied pressure indicated that the UCFT should increase as the applied pressure increases, while the LCFT should be relatively insensitive to applied pressure. The purpose of this communication is to examine the UCFT of a nonaqueous dispersion as a function of applied pressure. For dispersions of polymer particles stabilized by polyisobutylene (PIB) and dispersed in 2-methylbutane, it was observed that the UCFT moves to higher temperatures with increasing applied pressure. These results can qualitatively be rationalized by considering the effect of pressure on the free volume dissimilarity contribution to the free energy of close approach of the interacting particles. [Pg.318]

A physical unit system is implicitly defined by the choice of three underlying base units, which suffice to determine dimensionally consistent units for other measurable physical quantities. (Why three such base units are required is as yet an unanswered physical question.) Although the choice of units may superficially appear arbitrary, it was recognized by Gibbs (in his first scientific communication)1 that one can rationally address the question of the conditions which it is most necessary for these units to fulfil for the convenience both of men of science and of the multitude. ... [Pg.723]

The human element is not one third of sustainability it is central to its implementation (Pearson 2003). The challenge of sustainability is neither wholly technical nor rational. It is one of the change in attitude and behavior. Sustainability therefore must include the social discourse where the fundamental issues are explored collaboratively within the groups or community concerned. We do not do that very well, partly because of increasing populations, complexity, distractions, and mobility, but more because of certain characteristics of the dominant paradigm that are seen as desirable (Flicker 2001). [Pg.22]

As health-care professionals we need to identify and solve the problem together with the patient, and we need to do it in a rational and cost-effective way. For a practitioner this is not easy based on the rapidly expanding progress within the medical area, increasing demand from patients, and the manipulation of information from various interests in the field. First we need drugs and other treatments with documented effects (efficacy) in the elderly. Then we need to select the most appropriate drug for the individual patient. The latter is complicated and evidence-based medicine (EBM) has been suggested as the method. Finally we need to communicate with the patient and establish a partnership (concordance). [Pg.24]

Where we admit that people s behaviors may be less than fully rational, there is a further tendency to think about aberrant, regional, or specific kinds of behaviors as expressions of culture. Culture, in this case, is taken to mean the way certain groups of people do things— habits of action and understanding shared by communities, families, tribes, states, and nations. These, in turn, are understood to produce certain kinds of landscapes—social and natural environments that express something not just about individual decisions, but a collective identity. [Pg.4]
