Right set of circumstances

Most phytoactive compounds do not persist in soil in a free and active form for very long, yet they have been plausibly implicated, for example, in a mechanism of infection or nutrient acquisition therefore some suitable explanation must be found. The right set of circumstances was invoked by Uren and Reisenauer (17) to explain how labile reducing agents may be protected physically from Oi and be directed toward insoluble oxides of Mn. The right set of circumstances may have relevance in other situations, and some po.ssibilities are discussed later in this chapter. [Pg.21]

Contact reduction was proposed to explain how plants obtain Mn from soils of neutral and alkaline pH (91). The evidence that sterile sunflower roots could directly reduce in.soluble reactive oxides of Mn strengthened the theory (92). Nevertheless, the idea of the right set of circumstances to explain how labile... [Pg.32]

Very few root. secretions can be expected to be effective unless the right set of circumstances arises sufficiently often. Further, research involving soil-grown plants is required to establish whether the right set of circumstances, as discussed above, does make a real contribution to the well-being of field-grown plants. Similarly, close scrutiny of all research must be made, particularly when results obtained in solution cultures and other contrived situations are believed to be relevant for plants growing in soil. [Pg.34]

Owing to their superior fluorescent yield, heavy elements ordinarily yield considerably more intense XRF bands than the light elements. This feature can be exploited to determine the concentration of inorganic species in a sample, or the concentration of a compound that contains a heavy element in some matrix. Many potential XRF applications have never been developed owing to the rise of atomic spectroscopic methods, particularly inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry [74]. Nevertheless, under the right set of circumstances, XRF analysis can be profitably employed. [Pg.225]

Reversible Energy Transfer. It is almost always assumed that the transfer of triplet energy from the sensitizer to substrate is irreversible. Back transfer, transfer of triplet energy from the acceptor back to the sensitizer, can, however, take place under the right set of circumstances. The following scheme illustrates the mechanism for back transfer. [Pg.259]

Water is considered to be the universal solvent. Given the right set of circumstances, water will over time dissolve or cause the deterioration of concrete, masonry, metals, wood, and plastic. [Pg.801]

An interesting special set of circumstances governing patents apply in the case of so called prior users rights. These rights may arise in some countries to companies who can prove they were secretly operating a process or making a product, or had made effective and serious preparations to do so, prior to the patenting of that... [Pg.445]

The left-hand side of Eq. (9.61) represents the difference in rate of flow of heat, up - down, or the net flow upward- Since for a given set of circumstances the right-hand side is constant, the difference, or net rate of flow upward, is constant, independent of tray number in this section of the tower, and equal to that permanently taken out at the top with the distillate and at the condenser. Elimination of D between Eqs. (9.56) and (9.57) and between Eqs, (9.56) and (9.61) yields P y ... [Pg.375]

This requirement of a physical property system is generally accommodated by enabling the user to create the equivalent of the permanent system data bank by expHcitly entering data in the same format. Such private data banks can be used independently or in conjunction with the system data bank. Data supphed in this way normally require that the user has access to expertise in physical property data and possibly in computer use as well. In these circumstances the user may also wish to provide data in tabular or polynomial form for use by an appropriate set of interpolative point generation routines. This facihty is shown at the top right of Figure 5. [Pg.76]

In many circumstances, factors other than business knowledge will be more important in determining the quality of a mentoring relationship. These include that mentors must possess a particular set of skills, abilities and attributes. Furthermore, they must be familiar with mentoring techniques and processes and possess the right attitude towards mentoring. We will take a look at all of these components in the following sections. [Pg.153]

The cephamycins comprise a set of beta lactamase resistant fermentation products that consist of cephalosporins that include a methoxy group on the carbon bearing the amine. These agents were not suitable as drugs in their own right because of their poor biopharmaceutical properties. This was due to the circumstance that the natural products, like the original cephalosporins, occurred as their highly... [Pg.568]

The best mix of liability rules, information markets, and regulations varies across commodities even if efficiency is the only criterion. Because all are suboptimal in practice, the proper mix also depends on people s inefficiency preferences. Asserting that one values individual liberty eliminates only command-and-control regulation from the set of possibilities. Under the right circumstances, no liability, the negligence rule, strict liability, and strict liability with contributory negligence all promote individual liberty. On balance, 1 favor no liability or the negligence rule because 1 believe the adverse side effects of sfrict liability are too severe. [Pg.46]

In general, an infinite number of optimal sets of input polarizations exist that secure these condition numbers for four and three input polarizations. This corresponds to the rotation of the inscribed regular tetrahedron and triangle inside the Poincar0 sphere. Whereas, for two input polarizations only three pairs of input polarizations, namely, linear polarizations with azimuths at either 0° and 90° or 45°, and left and right circular polarizations are allowed. From (4.18) and (4.20) it can be seen that, all other circumstances being equal, we have a 25% reduction of the number of necessary measurements and an approximately 40% reduction of measurement error for two input polarizations in comparison to three input polarizations. In comparison with four input polarizations, we have a reduction by a factor of 2 of the number of necessary measurements, and approximately a factor of 2.3 reduction in measurement error. The combination of these two factors, the decrease of errors and decrease of number of necessary measurements, makes this approach to the... [Pg.255]

Most people get nervous about the specificity with which their personal success or failure will be measured. We like some flexibility to say we did the right things and that any lack of desired outcome is due to extenuating circumstances. A common tactic is to declare any outcome outside our complete control as unachievable. The problem with this is that for most people in an organization this leaves a narrow set of activities. The further you are from the front line to the customer, the more tempting and common this tactic becomes. [Pg.1002]
