Right set of circumstances

Most phytoactive compounds do not persist in soil in a free and active form for very long, yet they have been plausibly implicated, for example, in a mechanism of infection or nutrient acquisition therefore some suitable explanation must be found. The right set of circumstances was invoked by Uren and Reisenauer (17) to explain how labile reducing agents may be protected physically from Oi and be directed toward insoluble oxides of Mn. The right set of circumstances may have relevance in other situations, and some po.ssibilities are discussed later in this chapter. 

Contact reduction was proposed to explain how plants obtain Mn from soils of neutral and alkaline pH (91). The evidence that sterile sunflower roots could directly reduce in.soluble reactive oxides of Mn strengthened the theory (92). Very few root. secretions can be expected to be effective unless the right set of circumstances arises sufficiently often. Further, research involving soil-grown plants is required to establish whether the right set of circumstances, as discussed above, does make a real contribution to the well-being of field-grown plants. Similarly, close scrutiny of all research must be made, particularly when results obtained in solution cultures and other contrived situations are believed to be relevant for plants growing in soil. 

Owing to their superior fluorescent yield, heavy elements ordinarily yield considerably more intense XRF bands than the light elements. This feature can be exploited to determine the concentration of inorganic species in a sample, or the concentration of a compound that contains a heavy element in some matrix. Many potential XRF applications have never been developed owing to the rise of atomic spectroscopic methods, particularly inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry [74]. Nevertheless, under the right set of circumstances, XRF analysis can be profitably employed. 

Reversible Energy Transfer. It is almost always assumed that the transfer of triplet energy from the sensitizer to substrate is irreversible. This requirement of a physical property system is generally accommodated by enabling the user to create the equivalent of the permanent system data bank by expHcitly entering data in the same format. Such private data banks can be used independently or in conjunction with the system data bank. Data supphed in this way normally require that the user has access to expertise in physical property data and possibly in computer use as well. In these circumstances the user may also wish to provide data in tabular or polynomial form for use by an appropriate set of interpolative point generation routines. In many circumstances, factors other than business knowledge will be more important in determining the quality of a mentoring relationship. The best mix of liability rules, information markets, and regulations varies across commodities even if efficiency is the only criterion. Because all are suboptimal in practice, the proper mix also depends on people s inefficiency preferences. Asserting that one values individual liberty eliminates only command-and-control regulation from the set of possibilities. Most people get nervous about the specificity with which their personal success or failure will be measured. We like some flexibility to say we did the right things and that any lack of desired outcome is due to extenuating circumstances. A common tactic is to declare any outcome outside our complete control as unachievable. The problem with this is that for most people in an organization this leaves a narrow set of activities. The further you are from the front line to the customer, the more tempting and common this tactic becomes.
