The third and last writing-vs.-speaking distinction is that writing is much more effective in communicating facts, data, and details than is speaking (Decker 1992). In contrast, speaking clearly holds the power of persuasion. Depending on your primary objective—information transfer or persuasion choose wisely and carefully execute your medium.

Besides lead, there may be a variety of other substances that a worker may be exposed to. Earlier in this chapter we mentioned the possibility of mobile laboratories. If your site does have a mobile lab, there are a variety of other regulations that should be considered. Of course, hazard communication comes into play. A typical laboratory can have volumes of material safety data sheets in its libraries. Besides hazard communication, you should determine whether a chemical hygiene plan is a requirement. In addition, we need to consider how the laboratory might affect the site emergency plan. 

The microprocessor should also be able to support modem communication with remote computers. This feature will enable multiple plant operation and direct access to third party diagnostic and analysis support. Data can be transferred anywhere in the world using this technique. Not all predictive maintenance systems use a true RS 232 communications protocol or support modem communications. These systems can severely limit the capabilities of your program. The various predictive maintenance techniques will add other specifications for an acceptable data acquisition unit. 

File Transfer Protocol. A protocol used to move files over the Internet. Typically, you use a command line command, browser capability, or program on your computer called an FTP client to connect to an FTP server found on the Internet. Once connected to the FTP server, you can move files back and forth between your computer and the FTP server. SFTP, Secure FTP, is a more secure protocol for moving data over the Internet in which both your login information and data are encrypted during communications.
