Commodity teams

The control plan requested is often simple (see the example of the form in Figure 12.1). It is important to keep the control plan simple so it that it is a low cost item and so that it is useful as a communication tool. The control plan provides the basis for the purchaser s commodity team to ask questions and identify who are the change makers/process owners in the supplier s organization. Some firms allow their mature suppliers to conduct their own self-audit and submit it to them for review. They do reserve the right to inspect and verify the accuracy of the audit later, but usually they do not need to do so. These firms may also ask the supplier to conduct product audits during the year and compare the actual process to their documented procedures and the results to their targets. The key to this self-audit is the purchasing firm s personal relationships with the supplier and its abihty to track the supplier data. The purchasing firm can interpret the data because the commodity team previously analyzed the supplier s process control plan to understand the importance of the data from the supplier. 

Major registrants typically conduct as many residue trials as possible on their own research farms and contract the remainder to independent contract research companies. These contract research companies range in size from those that have several research farms to husband and wife teams with only one site. They also may include independent researchers who do not own a permanent test site but contract small plot test areas from farmers inside commercial production acreage. The goal of these trials is to conduct the smdy in a cropping system environment that represents commercial production systems, thereby ensuring that the raw agriculture commodities harvested represent commercially available commodities. 

Note Students sometimes complain that a project is not feasible at this stage and should be abandoned. However, the design team may not be fully aware of external developments, e.g. anticipated oil price rises, shortages of key commodities, etc. If a project does not appear feasible, it may be necessary to complete the design study in readiness for possible market changes and more favourable economic conditions. In this situation, it is preferable to perform the detailed economic evaluation (see Chapter 6) in terms of the changes in raw materials costs, increase in product price, etc., necessary to make the project profitable and feasible, rather than as a detailed statement of loss per annum.

This route was efficient and robust, using only inexpensive commodity chemicals without hazardous reagents. A number of companies in the chemical industry were among those which discovered the enormous value that could be created by improving their PSM capabilities, a value typically in the same order of magnitude as a major new product or business. The most relevant industrial success of castor oil as a precursor to macromolecular materials is the synthesis of PA 11. Scheme 4.26 illustrates the chemical steps leading from the oil to this high-tech PA. Mental workload is intrinsically linked to the concept of situation awareness (SA), which refers to the level of awareness that an individual has of a situation, an operator s dynamic understanding of what is going on, and has been formally defined as the perception of the elements in the environment within a volume of time and space, the comprehension of their meaning, and the projection of their status in the near future (Endsley, 1995, p. 36). SA is a critical commodity for process control room operators and teams.
