Light illumination

The ability to image lateral heterogeneity in Langmuir monolayers dates back to Zocher and Stiebel s 1930 study with divergent light illumination [166]. More recently the focus shifted toward the use of fluorescence microscopy of mono-layers containing a small amount of fluorescent dye [167]. Even in single-corn-... [Pg.128]

A close inspection under normal illumination reveals many indications of the condition of the painting and previous repairs. Also, because oil paints become more transparent with age, pentimenti, which originally would have been invisible after the overpainting, can be observed. Raking light illumination is very useful to determine the extent of cracking, distortions of the support, delaminations of the paint layers, etc. This stage of the examination is often done in close cooperation with styHstic experts. Thus, obvious problematic areas can be identified before the other tests are started. [Pg.420]

Beckman Elutriation Method. The Beckman elutriation method uses a chamber designed so that the centrifugal effect of the radial inward fluid flow is constant (Fig. 3). The separation chambers are made of transparent epoxy resin which faciUtates observation of the movements of the cell boundary in strobe light illumination. This enables detection of the radius at which the cells are separating. When a mixture of cells, eg, mononuclear white cells, enters the chamber, separation can be achieved by fine tuning centrifuge speed and inward fluid flow to the specific cell group. This is a laboratory method suitable for relatively small numbers of cells. Chambers are available in sizes to handle 2-3 x 10 , 1 2 x 10 , and 1 x 10 ° cells. The Beckman chambers can be appHed to collect mononuclear cells from bone marrow aspirates. [Pg.522]

Darkfield microscopy is one of the oldest modes of microscopy. Here, axial rays from the condenser are prevented from entering the objective, through the use of an opaque stop placed in the condenser, while peripheral light illuminates the specimen. Thus, the specimen is seen lighted against a dark Held. [Pg.64]

Internal electric lighting. Illumination is a specialist field and requires correct planning, installation and switching schedules. Remember that this energy is paid for twice - to put it in and then to take it out again. [Pg.352]

Upon UV light illumination, the photocatalytic reactions were initiated at the surface of the Pt/Ti02 catalyst, resulting in the formation of CO2, H2O, and intermediate species. Because of the overlap of the bands of CH3CH20Had (adsorbed ethanol) with the bands of the intermediate species, the intensity variations in the 1300-1750 cm region can be revealed through the difference spectra obtained by subtracting the spectrum at 0 min (i.e., before the reaction) from the subsequent... [Pg.464]

In the experiment of Chari etal. (1986), a silicon wafer 100 jum thick was hydrogenated from one side by electrolysis of H+ in a sulfuric acid solution, aided by white-light illumination or by a thin palladium film, the solution being negative relative to the surface, so that H2 was evolved at the palladium-acid interface and a supersaturation of H was produced in the solid. At the opposite side of the wafer, the solution was maintained positive relative to the surface, so that a current could flow only if... [Pg.308]

This class of CCD has a higher quantum yield than a front-illuminated similar CCD. The origin of this improvement is as follows. The silicon substrate for the chip is etched down, on the face opposite the electrodes, to reach a thin layer (—15 pm), and the light illuminates the array from the back, opposite from the usual way (Fig. 4). It was noted in Sec. 5 that electrode gates that are used for the readout process overlap the pixel surface. Since these electrodes have a given thickness and are laid on the front face, photoelectrons have to travel across a... [Pg.95]

In order to adjust the dark-field illumination, project the illumination light onto a piece of paper placed on the microscopic stage or on the obj ective lens. Adjust the position of the slit and the height of condenser so that the transmission light illuminates the sample uniformly and brightly, and that the diameter of the shaded area produced on the surface of the objective lens is larger than that of the objective lens (see Fig 1C). [Pg.127]

Thermometer. A special 300° thermometer in a metal jacket is immersed in the oil bath that s in the lower part of the apparatus. Two slots have been cut in the jacket to let light illuminate the thermometer scale from behind, and to let a thermometer periscope read the thermometer scale from the front. [Pg.82]

Raise the light on the end of the moveable arm so that the light illuminates the upper prism. Get out your dime and, with permission of your instructor, tighten the light source swivel arm lock nut as it gets tired and lets the light drop. [Pg.224]
