Gardner color scale

Gardner color scale is rrrade of arbitrary glass standards numbered from 1 to 18. Similar to the platintrm-cobalt scale a sample color is compared with differerrt glass standards and the closest glass standard is reported.

Color. Colors of hydrocarbon resins are routinely deterrnined on the Gardner scale (ASTM D154) or on the Saybolt scale (ASTM D156). 

The purity and straight-chain character of the paraffins are reflected in the color of the chlorinated products. Both thermally and photochemically chlorinated derivatives of the n-paraffin mixture were essentially colorless. Gardner scale color values of 1 and <1, respectively, were obtained on samples chlorinated to about the same degree by thermal (44% Cl) and photochemical (42% Cl) procedures. Commercial chlorinated wax has Gardner scale color values of 2 F6 to 4. 

Terpene Resin, Synthetic, occurs as a pale yellow to yellow, solid, thermoplastic resin. It is composed essentially of a-pinene, (3-pinene, and/or dipentene polymers. Its color is less than 4 on the Gardner scale (measured in 50% mineral spirit solution). It is insoluble in water.

Allyl glycidyl ether is refluxed at 155 0 while air is bubbled through it. After 48 hr the refractive index of the solution is found to increase to 1.4990 at 20°C (an increase of 0.0412) which corresponds to a conversion to polymer with a viscosity of 27.0 poises at 25 C. The color is given by the darkest resins contained in the adhesive (and, very rarely, by a specific pigment or carbon black contained in some rubber-based formulations). Color will almost always darken when the A S is exposed to high heat and oxidation, and this is a way to evaluate the heat resistance of hot melts. It will yellow after exposure to sunlight, UV and oxidation. Color may be measured with the Gardner scale.
