Process technicians need to understand the chemistry and physics of the operations and processes they work with. Associated with each piece of equipment or system is a series of scientific principles. These principles include, among other things, fluid flow, reactions, heat transfer, temperature, distillation, gas laws, pressure, electricity, mechanical rotation, material balance, pH measurements, density, specific gravity, the periodic table of elements, and organic chemistry. The full list is much longer than this the more technicians know, the better the product they will produce and the safer their work environment will be. 

It is difficult to separate chemistry and physics. Some colleges combine applied chemistry and physics into one course others have two separate courses. Almost all require either a natural science chemistry or physics course as a prerequisite a few require both. Completion of these courses helps round out a technician s academic and technical training. Completion of these courses also makes it easier for process technicians and engineers to communicate effectively. 

Applied General Chemistry Course Description Study of the general concepts of chemistry with an emphasis on industrial applications. Student will measure physical properties of matter, perform chemical calculations, describe atomic and molecular structures, distinguish periodic relationships of elements name and write inorganic formulas write equations for chemical reactions demonstrate stoichiometric relationships and demonstrate basic laboratory skills.

I went to college with the expectation of going to medical school... I changed my mind when we dissected a cat. I was a chemistry and math major. So I analyzed what the ftiture would hold between those two majors. Then, I decided to take my chances with chemistry. 

In college, I tried to sign up for an additional advanced math class and the secretary told me that it was closed. When I turned around to leave she said there is an honors section but you wouldn t want that. She assumed that I was not an honors student. But, I was. So, I was able to get in. Things like that accumulate. I know that I am going to encounter racism and I deal with it as best I can. But, I am very concerned when an attitude turns into behavior that can directly impact my fixture. While in college, I discovered that one physics classmate was in the class because of placement. I didn t know anything about advanced placement tests or AP courses.

Even if we discount international comparisons, however, it sometimes seems as though schools are still doing a worse Job today than they were in 1950. Is this true No, it s not. Let s look first at domestic standardized test scores. In 1995, 757o more students ecored above 650 on the SAT Math test than in 1941. If you factor out the Asian-American population, 57% of African-American, Hispanic, and white students did better on the SAT Math in 1995 than in 1941. The norms for the SAT Math test were the same between 1941 and 1995, so the higher scores are comparable. Test scores on the ACT college entrance exam have also increased each of the last three years. 

Do you need to brush up on some of the skills tested There are lots of books to help people with basic skills. You might start with the LearningExpress Skill Builders, a set of four books that help improve your practical math, writing, vocabulary and spelling, and reading comprehension. Enlist a teacher or a friend to help you, or check out the inexpensive courses offered by local high schools and community colleges. 

The SAT Reasoning Test is a standardized test developed by the Educational Testing Service for The College Board, an association of colleges and schools. It contains questions that test skills in math, reading, and writing. 

Most colleges require prospective students to submit SAT Reasoning Test scores as part of their applications. Colleges use SAT exam scores to help them evaluate the reading, writing, and math skills of prospective students. Therefore, it is important to do your best on the SAT so you can show colleges what you are capable of accomplishing. 

You will see your scaled math score in a column headed Score. There are also columns titled Score Range and Percentiles College-bound Seniors. The information in these columns can be useful in your preparations for college. 

Based on experience, The College Board believes that if you retake the SAT without further preparation, you are unlikely to move up or down more than thirty points within each subject tested. In other words, if you scored a 550 in math on your first SAT, chances are you wont score less than 520 or more than 580 in math if you take the exam again without any extra preparation. For this reason, it presents your score within a 60-point range to suggest that those are the range of scores that you could expect to get on the SAT. 

Along with information about your scaled score, The College Board also includes information about your raw score. The raw score tells you how well you did on each type of critical reading, math, and writing question—how many questions you answered correctly, how many you answered incorrectly, and how many you left blank. You can use this information to determine whether you can improve on a particular type of question. If you have already taken the SAT, use this information to see where you need to focus your preparation. 

Chemistry and physics are both very logical sciences, but both depend on math to translate concepts into application. Unfortunately, many students who struggle in these disciplines have more trouble with the mathematics than with the scientific concepts. Therefore, let us begin our exploration of chemistry and physics with a review of some basic math skills and concepts that you will use throughout this course. While this chapter reviews basic math skills, it cannot replace a basic understanding of college-level algebra. 

This chapter will review the fundamental mathematical concepts (algebra and trigonometry) needed for a quantitative understanding of college-level chemistry and physics. Virtually all of this material is covered in high-school mathematics classes, but often the connection to real scientific applications is not obvious in those classes. In contrast, the examples used here will frequently involve chemical and physical concepts that will be covered in detail in later chapters or in the later parts of a standard freshman chemistry book. Here they will be treated as math problems later you will see the underlying chemistry.
