Standard test development

Test method IP 309 is used to determine the low-temperature filterability of distillate fuels including those treated with a cold flow improver. The cold filter plugging point (CFPP) is defined as the highest temperature at which the fuel, when cooled under the prescribed conditions, will not flow through the filter or requires more than 60 seconds for 20 mL to pass through or fails to return completely to the test jar. The SAT Reasoning Test is a standardized test developed by the Educational Testing Service for The College Board, an association of colleges and schools. It contains questions that test skills in math, reading, and writing.

Standard test methods for chemical analysis have been developed and pubUshed (74). Included is the determination of commonly found chemicals associated with acrylonitrile and physical properties of acrylonitrile that are critical to the quaUty of the product (75—77). These include determination of color and chemical analyses for HCN, quiaone inhibitor, and water. Specifications appear in Table 10. 

Several countries have developed their own standard test methods for cellular plastics, and the International Organization for Standards (ISO) Technical Committee on Plastics TC-61 has been developing international standards. Information concerning the test methods for any particular country or the ISO procedures can be obtained in the United States from the American National Standards Institute. The most complete set of test procedures for cellular plastics, and the most used of any in the world, is that developed by the ASTM these procedures are pubUshed in new editions each year (128). There have been several reviews of ASTM methods and others pertinent to cellular plastics (32,59,129—131).

A number of specialized methods were developed for testing particular articles manufactured from polyolefins several of these determine the performance of PB and PMP film, including the measurement of the film s dart impact strength and tear strength. Dart impact strength is measured by dropping a heavy dart with a round tip on a stretched film. Tear resistance, which reflects the film s resistance to tear propagation, is measured with the Ehnendorf tear tester. Two values for the tear strength are usually reported, one in the machine dkection of the film and the other in the transverse dkection. Pipes manufactured from PB are tested by pressurizing them internally with water the time-to-burst failure is determined at various temperatures (46). The standard test method for haze and luminous transmittance (ASTM D1003) is used for the measurement of PMP optical characteristics.

International agreement is close as of 1996 on what an acceptable environmentally degradable polymer should do ia the environment succiacdy put, it must not harm the environment. There has been much progress ia the early 1990s on this issue standard protocols are available to determine degradation ia the environment of disposal, and definitions are understood and accepted ia a broad sense, if not ia detail. Fate and effects issues for these new polymers are being addressed, and these will be resolved and appropriate tests developed. 

In order to develop the proper dow pattern, knowledge of a material s dow properties is essential. Standard test equipment and procedures for evaluating sohds dow properties are available (6). Direct shear tests, mn to measure a material s friction and cohesive properties, allow determination of hopper wall angles for mass dow and the opening size required to prevent arching. Other devices available to evaluate sohds dowabiUty include biaxial and rotary shear testers. 

One standard test used to determine the presence of the coliform group is called the multiple-tube fermentation technique (sometimes called the presumptive test). If this test indicates the presence of these bacteria, then a confirmed test must be done. If only negative colonies or no colonies develop during this test, it is considered negative otherwise, a completed test must be undertaken. Positive results obtained in the completed test are evidence for the presence of coliform bacteria. Testing methods have been given by the APHA, and the detailed procedures contained therein should be consulted (20). 

The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) F4 Committee on Medical Materials and Devices has developed specifications for chemical composition, mechanical properties, and other factors. Standard test methods also are available from ASTM, 1916 Race Street, Philadelphia. The quaHty of castings is important for dental implants, and standards to define this would be useful. 

After the preceding considerations have been taken into account, a test plan is developed to best meet the goals of the program. This might involve one of the standard plans developed by statisticians. Such plans are described in various texts (Table 1) and are considered only briefly here. Sometimes, combinations of plans are encountered, such as a factorial experiment conducted in blocks or a central composite design using a fractional factorial base. 

As should be apparent from the variety of applications, there are many test methods for hot melts, most of which are application specific. Many such tests were developed by adhesive suppliers and are proprietary to them. The use of standardized testing is most common for PSA tapes and labels. These tests are discussed elsewhere in this volume. 

Important flammability characteristics are the lower and upper flammability limits, the flash point, the minimum ignition energy, the minimum oxygen concentration, and the autoignition temperature. Values of some of these properties are published for many compounds (NFPA, 1994). These numbers have typically been developed under standardized test conditions. Process conditions may influence their values. 

There is a need to develop a standardized test approach to induce an overdriven detonation since the overdriven detonation has the potential of producing the most severe mechanical damage to a flame arrester. 

If product use conditions vary appreciably from those of the standard test, a stress-strain curve, derived using the procedure of anticipated requirement, should be requested and appropriate data developed. 

The present chapter, therefore, will present certain topics based on a selection of references, mainly in view of providing a perception of the current developments and great potential of chitin today. The reader is referred to books and reviews [1-17] where basic information and specific subjects are treated in a more systematic way. These polysaccharides are described not only in encyclopaedias, handbooks, monographs and articles, but also in the American Standard Testing Materials standard guides and in the Pharmacopoeias of various coimtries [10,16,17].
