Test method IP 309 is used to determine the low-temperature filterability of distillate fuels including those treated with a cold flow improver. The cold filter plugging point (CFPP) is defined as the highest temperature at which the fuel, when cooled under the prescribed conditions, will not flow through the filter or requires more than 60 seconds for 20 mL to pass through or fails to return completely to the test jar. International agreement is close as of 1996 on what an acceptable environmentally degradable polymer should do ia the environment succiacdy put, it must not harm the environment. There has been much progress ia the early 1990s on this issue standard protocols are available to determine degradation ia the environment of disposal, and definitions are understood and accepted ia a broad sense, if not ia detail. Fate and effects issues for these new polymers are being addressed, and these will be resolved and appropriate tests developed. [Pg.483]

One standard test used to determine the presence of the coliform group is called the multiple-tube fermentation technique (sometimes called the presumptive test). If this test indicates the presence of these bacteria, then a confirmed test must be done. If only negative colonies or no colonies develop during this test, it is considered negative otherwise, a completed test must be undertaken. Positive results obtained in the completed test are evidence for the presence of coliform bacteria.
