Collaborative Research Projects

This is said to be UK s largest collaborative research project on miniaturized chemistry, mainly concerning the use of chip technology. Members are universities, vendors and user companies (see also [45]). The consortium initiates a large, multidisciplinary collaboration, which combines academic excellence, user steering, and manufacturer input. 

The total 5-year investment in the materials chemistry programs (MC and MCCP) was more than 18 million. That number might be considered modest, but MC-MCCP accomplished two things (1) it initiated about 60 collaborative research projects in the chemistry research community, where individualism was the overwhelming norm and (2) it established within NSF a paradigm for interdivisional cooperation in the review and funding of interdisciplinary research. 

Comorbid personality disorders have long been associated with TRD and a poor response to antidepressant treatment. For example, Pfohl et al. (1984) observed only a 16% response rate in inpatients with comorbid depression and personality disorder compared with a 50% response rate in patients with pure depression. Similar results were reported from a study by D. W. Black et al. (1987), in which, with the use of ECT in addition to a TCA, the response rate among those with a comorbid Axis II disorder was lower, 42% compared with a 60% recovery in those without Axis II pathology. The best approach for these patients may be a combination of psychotherapy and medication. This approach was recently borne out by the Treatment of Depression Collaborative Research Project (Shea et al. 1990), which found that cognitive-behavioral therapy yielded a better response than either imipra-... 

A still lower-cost route to PHAs is genetic modification of plants to directly produce the final polymer. Monsanto (and others) pursued this approach and is currently being cofunded by the US Department of Energy (DOE) in a collaborative research project led by Metabolix. Switchgrass will be modified to produce PHAs, which can then be extracted from the plant material and processed to obtain a consistent composition and the desired material properties. The plant material remaining after PHA extraction can be used to produce fuels, power, or other products, creating the opportunity for a "plants as factories" biorefinery. Applications for polymers with properties similar to those of PHAs consume on the order of 13.6 million metric t annually, and it is possible that in the future PHAs will figure prominently in the plastics market.

An expert system shell developed in the MYCIN project is EMYCIN, which was used to develop other expert systems. One of these systems is PUEE, designed for the domain of heart disorders. Another outcome was the ventilator manager (VM) program developed as a collaborative research project between Stanford University and Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco within the scope of a Ph.D. thesis by Lawrence M. Fagan [6]. VM was designed to interpret on-line quantitative data in the intensive care unit. The system measures the patient s heart rate, blood pressure, and the status of operation of a mechanical ventilator that assists the patient s breathing. Based on this information, the system controls the ventilator and makes necessary adjustments. 

A systematic study addressing the competing effects of the dominating flow controlling mechanisms and the interaction between combustion and flow dynamics is the subject of the collaborative research project with UC. 

In addition to being a solvent, a reaction and a transport medium water influences the gas transport, and in turn the redox conditions, in porous media. The distribution and movement of water obviously becomes an important factor for leaching of contaminants. Unfortunately only very limited data exists on the movement of water in roads. Studies of water movement in roads were identified as an important future research area in the large European collaborative research project ALT-MAT (ALTernative MATerials in road construction) [11]. 

If the answer to both these questions is yes , then the polymer can be said to have intrinsic microporosity [3,4] intrinsic because it is a consequence of the molecular structure and microporosity because we are dealing with micropores in the sense defined by lUPAC [2], This chapter introduces a concept for creating just such polymer structures, outlines the properties of the archetypal polymer of intrinsic microporosity , PIM-1, and describes recent results for PIM-1 obtained in the course of a European collaborative research project [5].

The Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) is Europe s largest public-private initiative aiming to accelerate the development of better and safer medicines [27]. IMI supports collaborative research projects with the building of networks comprised of industrial and academic experts in order to boost European pharmaceutical innovation. It is a joint undertaking between the European Union and the European pharmaceutical industry association EFPIA [28]. 

From the inception, the purpose of the FP has been to encourage transnational collaborative research projects, and this explains why one of the essential requirements for all EU-funded projects is that the participants in research teams have to come from more than one of the EU Member States.
