An example of the application of the wide isolation window in tandem mass spectrometry is the detection and quantitative imaging of cocaine in postmortem human brain tissue (Reich et al., 2008 Reich et al., 2010). In this instance, it was determined necessary to develop an MS wide isolation window method because of interfering background ions. Cocaine detected in brain tissue was confirmed by matching six MS product ions with those from a cocaine standard. For the quantitation of cocaine analyzed from the tissue, the trideuterated ( Hs) internal standard was spiked beneath the tissue at known concentrations before matrix application to develop a calibration curve. The MS wide isolation method was then employed for the analysis of cocaine and cocaine-fi 3. Cocaine was analyzed successfully and quantified using this approach. [Pg.464]

Dispersion staining is useful for rapid deterrnination of refractive index and dispersion. It is appHed most often, however, for needle-in-a-haystack detection of any particular substance in a mixture such as chrysotile in insulation, cocaine in dust samples, quartz in mine samples, or any particular mineral, eg, tourmaline, in a forensic soil sample. [Pg.334]

The importance of tropinone as a possible starting-point for the production of the therapeutically valuable alkaloids atropine, hyoscyamine, cocaine, tropacocaine and the artificial tropeines (p. 73) led Robinson to consider the possibility of preparing this substance by a simple method. Starting with the idea that the formula for tropinone (XXX) may be regarded as made up of the formulae of the residues of succindialdehyde (XXVII), methylamine (XXV III) and acetone (XXIX), he found that a mixture of these substances in water, when allowed to stand for thirty minutes produced tropinone, which could be detected by means of its characteristic dipiperonylidene derivative (bright yellow needles, m.p. 214°). [Pg.79]

Note It is possible to differentiate amino acids by color on the basis of the markedly different shades produced [2, 3]. Proline and hydroxyproline, that only react weakly with ninhydrin, also yield pink-red colored derivatives [2]. Ergot alkaloids and LSD are detected by spraying with 10% hydrochloric add and then heating to 110°C for 20 min after they have been treated with the reagent [9]. Ergot alkaloids and LSD yield red to purple zones when treated in this manner other alkaloids, e.g. reserpine, emetine, quinine, strychnine, pilocarpine, atropine, scopolamine, cocaine and opium alkaloids, do not give a reaction [9]. [Pg.169]

Note Tertiary amines and quaternary ammonium compounds yield stronger colors than primary amines [25]. The dipping solution can also be used as spray solution [44]. Other reagent compositions have also been reported in the literature (1, 3, 6, 12, 13, 15, 18, 21, 23, 41] In some cases the reagents have been made up in acetone [38, 39], methanol [14] or ethanol [37] and/or acidified with hydrochloric acid [3, 33, 37-40]. The concentrations of hexachloroplatinic(IV) acid have been in the range of 0.05 -0.4 those of potassium iodide between 0.5 and 24spray solution containing 2% potassium iodide and 0.23170 hexachloroplatinic(IV) acid hexahydrate in N-hydro-chloric acid is reported to yield the best coloration results with respect to detection sensitivity and color differentiation in the detection of morphine, codeine, quinine, methadone and cocaine [46]. Acidic reagent solutions have been recommended for benzodiazepines [10, 11]. Sulfones do not react [39]. [Pg.188]

Table 1 provides the urinalysis test results for the 4,847 arrestees, While PCP was tested for by an EMIT test only, cocaine, opiates and methadone were tested for by both EMIT and thin layer chromatography (TLC). (The EMIT test for opiates is not specific to morphine, the metabolite of heroin, and can detect the recent use of a variety of opiates. A specimen positive for opiates is most likely to indicate the use of heroin in this population, however.) Our analyses will use only the results from the EMIT tests, because we have learned that the TLC general drug screen is less sensitive for detecting recent use of these illicit street drugs (Wish et al. 1983 Wish et al. 1984). [Pg.191]

The safety of the cocaine vaccine TC-CD in former cocaine abusers has been evaluated in a Phase I clinical trial, and it was determined that the vaccine was well tolerated with dose-related increases in antibody levels.65 Two Phase II clinical trials have now been conducted.66,67 The vaccine was again well tolerated and subjects reported a reduction in cocaine s reinforcing effects. The antibody levels were detectable after the second dose, peaked at 8 to 12 weeks, and remained elevated for up to 6 months preliminary findings indicated a negative association between antibody level and cocaine use. Other anti-cocaine vaccines in development include a blocking antibody (ITAC-cocaine) and a monoclonal catalytic antibody (15A10). [Pg.87]

For example, dogs trained to detect cocaine often detect methyl benzoate, a product of the partial decomposition of cocaine when it is exposed to humid airJ2 Note that cocaine (Fig. 13.6.1) has two ester linkages these ester linkages are... [Pg.177]

As it can be observed in Fig. 2, three out of the 16 investigated compounds, namely, heroin, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), and its metabolite 2-oxo, 3-hydroxy-LSD (O-H-LSD), were not detected in any wastewater sample. Two other target analytes, 6-acetyl morphine (6ACM) and A9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), were only present in influent wastewaters and with low detection frequencies. The most ubiquitous compounds, present in all influent and effluent wastewater samples analyzed, were the cocaine metabolite benzoylecgonine, and the amphetamine-like compounds ephedrine (EPH) and 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA or ecstasy). Cocaine, cocaethylene (CE, transesterification product of cocaine formed after the joint consumption of cocaine and ethanol), and morphine (MOR) were detected in all influent, but not in all effluent wastewaters (see Fig. 2). [Pg.194]

Burning test. The powdered cocaine is placed on aluminum foil and held over a low flame or match. The cocaine will burn clear. A sugar cut will darken and burn a dark brown or black therefore the larger the cut, the darker the burn. Crystallized speed or methamphetamine will pop when burned. Salts do not burn and remain as residue (cuts such as procaine or quinine also burn fairly pure although it is alleged that procaine can be detected by a bubbling of the substance before it burns clear). [Pg.169]
