Site-specific delivery will require the use of a self-locating system, typically a bioadhesive formulation, although an IVR, due to its elastomeric nature, will remain located high in the vaginal space. Conversely, for rapid distribution throughout the space, semisolid or fast-dissolving solid systems will be required. For semisolids, flow properties and viscoelastic character will be the critical determinants of their ability to spread rapidly from their point of application. [Pg.408]

A third type of ionic conduction occurs in polymer electrolytes, such as polyethylene oxide. The mechanism of ionic conduction in polymer electrolytes is not entirely understood. However, it is believed to involve rapid polymer segmental motion which creates regions of an elastomeric nature. These elastomeric regions have relaxation times similar to liquids, and, thus, allow a higher ionic mobility than would be concluded from the polymer s macroscopic properties [2]. [Pg.359]

The pneumatic actuated micropump in a multilayer microfluidic device also has some disadvantages. The elastomeric nature of pump material PDMS may cause the features in the microfluidic devices to shrink or sag. Nonspecific adsorption with biological samples may also occur in the PDMS pneumatic pump. In addition, the necessary valve array and pneumatic control system stand-alone to support the pump occupy large spaces. [Pg.2807]

ABS copolymer is a popular engineering thermoplastic because of its unique properties, which include an excellent mechanical response, chemical resistance, fine surface appearance, and easy processing characteristics. Its unique properties. It consists of a styrene-acrylonitrile (SAN) continuous phase partially grafted onto a dispersed polybutadiene phase of an elastomeric nature. ABS resin is its inherent flammability and lower thermal stability when it is exposed to heat, mechanical stress, and ionizing or ultraviolet radiation in the presence of oxygen because of the formation of reactive intermediates such as free radicals and hydroperoxides. [Pg.171]

The nature of SB block copolymers is defined by the weight ratio of styrene and butadiene. Those that contain more than 50 wt% butadiene are elstomers showing distinct elastomeric behavior. Industrially most polymers of this type contain 10-40 wt% styrene. As the styrene content increases the elastomeric nature of the block copolymer decreases. If the styrene content is above 50 wt% then a thermoplastic resin is obtained. These materials have the typical properties of... [Pg.7958]

Similar improvements in mechanical properties of nanocellulose/NR and nanolignin/NR composites have been reported by Favier et al. (1995), Hajji et al. (1996), Abraham et al. (2007) and Thakur et al. (2014b). Due to the uniform dispersion of the nanocellulose in mbber latex, the composites showed improved stiffness and strength without any loss of its elastomeric nature, as shown in SEM micrograph of Fig. 8. The research on nanocellulose/NR composites is an emerging field and more work needs to be done in this area. [Pg.550]

The role of elastomeric tougheners is intimately related to the fracture mechanism in operation. In matrices that are inherently shear yielding, impact modifiers act as stress concentrators where shear bands are initiated. When the polymeric matrix tends to craze, the toughening particles induce multiple craze formation and their elastomeric nature prevents the growth of large crazes that could develop into unstable cracks. [Pg.390]

Expert information has been supplied in 47 chapters written by 70 industry specialists, professors, and consultants. Five chapters on fundamentals provide the theoretical and economic underpinnings—why adhesives work, how they are selected, how the surface is prepared, how they are applied, how they are set, how the cured joint is tested. The economic importance of the adhesive-using industries is spelled out, with specifics on the role of adhesives in construction, packaging, autos, aircraft/aerospace, textiles, footwear, abrasives, electronics, and in the home. The next 28 chapters cover the adhesive materials—thermosetting, thermoplastic, elastomeric, natural polymers, cou-... [Pg.786]
