Many finishes exhibit low maintenance requirements (e.g. plasticzed metallic sheeting, epoxy coatings, continuous tiling systems, etc.). Others may be more maintenance intensive and may provide lower durability. However, selection must also consider the other operating parameters such as acoustic performance (which may mandate heavier mass or more porous-surfaced materials) or load-bearing capabilities, etc. [Pg.62]

Scotts technology (17) uses fluid-bed (Wurster column) technology to apply polymeric coatings to a number of fertilizer substrates including urea, potassium nitrate, potassium sulfate, and monoammonium phosphate (MAP). The coating material is appHed as a water-borne latex onto the fluidized substrate. As the substrate is fluidized with warm air (40—50°C), water is driven off and the latex coalesces into a continuous film around the fertilizer particle. The particular latex compositions used have selected glass-transition and blocking temperatures, which enable quick removal of the water before the soluble fertilizer core dissolves. This obviates the need to use precoats prior to the latex appHcation. [Pg.137]

In general, the requirements of heat resistance limit film thickness and therefore corrosion resistance. This is a particular problem when surfaces fluctuate between hot and cold. Coatings should be selected carefully, depending on the exact maximum temperature that will be experienced. Wherever possible, conventional materials should be used. General corrosion damage was the cause of failure of an A1 alloy welded pipe assembly in an aircraft bowser which was attacked by a deicing-fluid — water mixture at small weld defects . Selective attack has been reported in welded cupro-nickel subjected to estuarine and seawater environments . It was the consequence of the combination of alloy element segregation in the weld metal and the action of sulphate reducing bacteria (SRB). Sulphide-coated Cu-enriched areas were cathodic relative to the adjacent Ni-rich areas where, in the latter, the sulphides were being continuously removed by the turbulence. The titanosilicate version of UTD-1 has been shown to be an effective catalyst for the oxidation of alkanes, alkenes, and alcohols (77-79) by using peroxides as the oxidant. The large pores of Ti-UTD-1 readily accommodate large molecules such as 2,6-di-ferf-butylphenol (2,6-DTBP). The bulky 2,6-DTBP substrate can be converted to the corresponding quinone with activity and selectivity comparable to the mesoporous catalysts Ti-MCM-41 and Ti-HMS (80), where HMS = hexagonal mesoporous silica. Both Ti-UTD-1 and UTD-1 have also been prepared as oriented thin films via a laser ablation technique (81-85). Continuous UTD-1 membranes with the channels oriented normal to the substrate surface have been employed in a catalytic oxidation-separation process (82). At room temperature, a cyclohexene-ferf-butylhydroperoxide was passed through the membrane and epoxidation products were trapped on the down stream side. The UTD-1 membranes supported on metal frits have also been evaluated for the separation of linear paraffins and aromatics (83). In a model separation of n-hexane and toluene, enhanced permeation of the linear alkane was observed. Oriented UTD-1 films have also been evenly coated on small 3D objects such as glass and metal beads (84, 85). [Pg.234]

Manson (72,) expanded the concept to the solid state by observing that the strength of composite materials also depended upon the acid-base interaction between continuous and dispersed phases. More directly, Vanderhoff et al. (21) addressed the issue of adhesion of polymeric materials to corroded steel. They synthesized eight corrosion products of iron, and used the interaction scheme developed by Fowkes and Manson first to characterize the iron corrosion products as Lewis acids or bases and then to select polymer vehicles for practical coating systems. Such results were employed to enhance the adhesion of epoxy systems to substrates which were predominantly iron oxide in nature.
