Robert Richards . .. that the immediate contract that the mother had with her child if that is delayed a great deal, the attachment, the kind of what I would think of as an instinctive response of the mother to the child, is proportionately less. So that s something we didn t know before. We do know it now. But all of this. .. even though these are facts one would think of as a very simple sort, they do cry out, or they need an explanation. And it seems to me the evolutionary explanation is straightforward, and I doubt that many people in this room would deny it. [Pg.245]

Many eminent persons have had children with serious mental problems and have had at least one child take his or her life. Robert Frost s daughter was committed to the state mental hospital and another daughter had a nervous breakdown. One of Albert Einstein s children was diagnosed as schizophrenic. Ambrose Bierce s oldest son committed suicide, and his other died of alcoholism at age 27. Thomas Edison had two children who became alcoholics, one of whom committed suicide. Alfred Stieglitz s daughter was psychotic and committed to a mental institution. James Joyce had two children. His son became an alcoholic his daughter went mad and, as discussed, was admitted to an asylum for schizophrenia. Numerous other examples demonstrate the frequent problems of geniuses children. Many of these children tried unsuccessfully to pursue careers similar to their eminent parents, but it is not clear if this played any role in their mental problems. [Pg.134]

In a third study the Robert Wood Johnson database of published literature on prenatal cocaine exposure and child outcome was examined (274). Only 8 of 101 studies focused on school-age children. Intelligence quotient (IQ), receptive language, and expressive language were measured. This meta-analysis showed an average difference of 3.12 IQ points between cocaine-exposed and control groups. When the IQ distribution is shifted downwards by this amount, there is a 1.6-fold increase in the number of children with IQs under 70. The authors noted that the calculated decrement in IQ in exposed children is subtle and does not include the possible effect of the drug on domains of function such as language abilities. [Pg.514]

My husband did, he participated in the sonar project. Urey invited me to join his project at Columbia that was part of the Manhattan Project and as I later learned, it was on the separation of uranium isotopes. I had just borne my first child. I visited Urey and he told me that there was a job for me and that I would have to work until midnight every day. Du Vigneaud, for whom I worked at the time, said that we should not abandon basic research because the war would be over one day and we should not let the whole research infrastructure disappear. He wanted me to stay with basic research. Du Vigneaud was involved in war research on the penicillin project. With all these considerations, I decided not to join Urey s project. Then Robert Oppenheimer called Henry and offered him a job in Los Alamos. The Manhattan project was a very well kept secret. The scientists knew but nobody else did. My husband said that this project was not for this war, but for the next war. He wanted to stick with sonar, which was for this war. So he didn t go. He was almost right. [Pg.265]

Arthur S. Edison obtained a B.S. in chemistry from the University of Utah, where he studied monoterpenes isolated from southern Utah sagebrush by NMR. He completed his Ph.D. in biophysics from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where he developed and applied NMR methods for peptide and protein structural studies under the supervision of John Markley and Frank Weinhold. In 1993, Dr. Edison joined the laboratory of Anthony O. W. Stretton at the University of Wisconsin as a Jane Coffin Childs postdoctoral fellow where he investigated the role of neuropeptides in the nervous system of the parasitic nematode Ascaris suum. He joined the faculty at the University of Florida and the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in 1996 and is currently the Director of Chemistry Biology at the NHMFL. Dr. Edison s current research is in technology development for high-sensitivity NMR and natural product discovery in nematodes and other invertebrates. Dr. Edison is the recipient of the 1997 American Heart Association Robert J. Boucek Award, a CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation in 1999, and, with his postdoctoral scientist Aaron Dossey, the Beal award for the best publication of the year in the Journal of Natural Products in 2007. [Pg.195]
